Has your boyfriend tried any other psychiatrists? I was lucky when I found one who prescribed Ablify (10mg/day). It was just what I needed to get back on my feet. I recovered from Bipolar I almost a year ago (no more meds and no more instability). The first step was handling the crisis with heavy meds, then transitioning to Abilify for initial recovery. I ended up moving into advanced recovery after 4 years of struggling with coping and medications.
I've gotten back to my old-eccentric self but without the unstable mood swings - if that even sounds possible! I'm just a lot more careful these days!
I hold a job working in government on defense related research. It is one example that even Bipolar I's can get a Ph.D. and a top research position. I hope your boyfriend can get stable enough to figure out how to beat bipolar - it can be done.
Diagnosis: Bipolar I
Meds: none

No he hasn't. He was on Lithium briefly but did not like the effect it had on him so he settled with Trileptal. This gives me some hope for him. I really do hope he can get stabilized so we can have a future together. He is only newly diagnosed so maybe this is why..
