Need some advice on topamax (time of aday and dosage)

Postby afink87 » Tue Oct 23, 2012 7:35 pm

My regular (new) physician admitted to me that he was uncomfortable prescribing my seroquel, but did it because I was already on it, otherwise he'd send me to a psychiatrist because he is unfamiliar with those types of meds. Well today he put me on topamax (while awaiting my psych referral to get off seroquel) for my almost daily migraines. Everything I've read said to tirate (slowly build up) he advised I take 25mg twice a day for 7 days then 50mg twice a day after that. I'm worried for two reasons. One, the topamax pack starts you off on only 25 mg a day, and two, sleepiness can be a side effect, so I don't want to take one in the morning and be zonked all day.

I'm also wondering if it does make you tired, about how long after you take the pill do you become tired? Tonight is my first night taking it, and we are going to be at a dinner party this evening.

If you have any advice or stories please feel free to share, I love reading them!

oh yea, one LAST question.... the seroquel caused me to put on about 10 pounds, so I am literally only 10 pounds over weight (129lbs 5'3) So I'm not even considered overweight..... If you were of NORMAL weight what did this drug do to you? I am scared of losing to much weight, my boobies will deflate and hubby doesn't like that :(

Thanks so much for trying to help cracked. I have been resistant to meds for about a decade, seroquel was the first med that I went on which ended up not working so well, and topamax being the second I've gone onto. I like to read and know as much as possible, and have many questions. I appreciate all help :)

I'm only on 25 mg right now. No side effects, no dopey feeling, no loss of appetite, tingling. But I'm very lethargic, wondering if this is a side affect of topamax, or still the seroquel that I'm still on.

I believe that topamax can knock you out a bit so it could well be that that is causing you to feel lethargic - having said that seroquel can knock you out too. If it has been more since starting the topamax tho I would think it is more likely to be that.

I hope it helps you and glad you dont have other side effects from it

Hugs
