carbamazepine?

Postby Adna » Fri Jan 27, 2006 1:49 am

Does anyone have any experience with carbamazepine for BP that they would like to share? I am just curious what results others might have had. Thanks.

Carbamazipine under the brand name Equetro was the first drug my pdoc put me on. I liked some things about it at the beginning (I felt much more calm, had no racing thoughts, and started to think "Wow...is THIS how other people feel inside their heads?Well, THAT explains why they don't do the wacky things I do!")

As my levels increased I started having severe side effects like word slurring, coordination problems, pretty bad short term memory loss, and depression. I went off of it and switched to Lamictal which seemed snapped my out of the depression at first, but soon I developed the same problems with side effects (this time just really bad memory loss).

Everyone is different of course. Some people do quite well on thses types of drugs. It depends on your own unique brain chemistry and probably some version of luck :)
Hey, you can always try it and go off it of it doesn't work.

I hope it works out well for you

Hello,

As you know carbamazepine, the active ingredient and the generic name for tegretol, is the sister med to trileptal.

I was on that for a year , it did me good, but then my manic broke thru. I am bipolar 1. We adjusted the dosage, but the mania keep leaking. So they then added geodon. I got an upper resp. infection and went off the geodon. So with just the trileptal, I stopped it.

I've had so many help in one area and make other areas worse, sometimes physical.

For some they swear by tegretol, and it supposed to be very good, but has weight gain properties that I , with prediabetes, cannot tolerate.

Best of luck to you,
