I seen Stephen Frys documentary and it actually paints a bad picture when you consider the very skewed sample base.

I read the often quoted "Touched with fire" and "The hypomanic edge". They both seem written by some scholar with a personal agenda lobbying for acceptance and research funds for their favorite cash cow diagnosis.

The truth is most patients in psych wards are bipolars, not schizophrenics even though schizophrenia has a worse reputation to it. A lot of homeless people are bipolar, not the stereotypical drug addicted schizophrenic.

My point is: Dont glorify the disease. Get treatment early and often and do exactly as the doctor says, you wont become the next Hemingway by freeing yourself from help. Whatever you do, don't ruin the personal relations with your caregivers during an aggravated hypomania or aggresive depression. The whole world evolves around engaging relationships. Distrustful or straining realtionships are the opposite of that and you will only suffer being bureaucratized by an unengaged psychiatrist.
