Does this sound like mania to you?

Postby never42 » Mon Dec 12, 2011 8:49 am

So I've put up a couple of posts about a friend of mine. Everytime she was suicidal or self-distructive. Now it's completely different. I think she's gone manic. Possibly for the first time ever.

She was in a psychiatric hospital recently for 3 weeks. She sorta kept me out of the loop about halfway through her stay. It's now about a month after she got discharged and I saw her again.

Does this sound like mania to you:
-She lost 9kg (20 pounds) in about a week and a half. Just from not eating.
-She cheated on her boyfriend. Something I never would've expected from her.
-She's convinced their relationship is over, even though she doesn't really give a reason. Even though she explained to me how her boyfriend is so great to her, she is convinced it's over.
-She disappeared for 2 days. Staying at a guy she met in hospital.
-She got a tattoo.
-Her entire demeanor is different, almost confrontational.
-She stopped taking all her meds. That includes all painkillers, anti-depros, muscle relaxants. This is significant because she has a neurological disorder. She says she's in tremendous pain, but she's determined to stay off meds. She been on constant meds for over 7-years.
-She suddenly act as if she found this "enlightenment".
-She says she has outbursts of rage.

I know a lot of you will say that only a professional can tell. But she was in hospital surrounded by professionals for 3 weeks! I just want some objective opinions. And yes, this all seems very out of character for her.

To me yes - wonder why it has not been picked up by the professionals - when is she next seeing someone?

I don't think she's gonna see someone anytime soon if ever. :?

In which case one of two things will likely happen, she will improve and you can talk to her about it and try to persuade her to get help when she is thinking a little more clearly; or she will end up sectioned with meds forced on her. I really hope it is the former. Keep us posted hon

It sounds like it might be mania, but what you've described would fit a lot of other conditions, too. Whatever it is, though, it definitely sounds like she needs psychiatric attention. If you can, see if she would be willing to talk to whoever originally suggested that she enter the institution before.
