switching doctors

Postby chicagowoman » Mon Aug 08, 2005 6:09 am

I have been medicated for severed depression for the past ten years, but only the past three years has the diagnosis changed (in my view probably correctly) to bipolar type II disorder. I have had some excellent doctors and counselors over the years. However I have had a new doctor for the past two months and I feel he has been irresponsible. I felt interrogated after the first meeting, he dozed off several times during our third meeting (!!) and after our last meeting (only four one/on/one's) I felt as if he was berating me unprofessionally.
My question is, I'd like to fire him, but I wonder how I can tell if I'm upset by what he was saying or how he was saying it. If I'm only upset by what he was saying then maybe I ought to stick with him and get to the core. Or, irregardless, just get rid of the guy who makes me uncomfortable for whatever reason. Can anyone give any suggestions? Thanks.

Doctors

I have had a similar situation with a doctor. I went to another doctor to get a second opinion and like him much more than first one. He also prescribed Cognitive Therapy from a Psychologist that he recommended. Therapy was never mentioned by the other doctor, who also insulted me while I was being treated for a psychotic episode. In the midst of this he wanted me to come up with a 5 year plan for my life. I was having paranoid delusions and barely able to complete a sentence. I couldn't think ahead one day, much less 5 years.

I have dropped the first doctor and opted for the second. The second doctor treats me with respect and actually has helpful suggestions that work.

Thanks for the reply about having a similar experience. I don't see how a doctor could ask you for a five year plan!! I completely sympathize with the idea that the "professional" doesn't seem to understand the condition he/she is dealing with! Thanks again.

If you are not comfortable with that doctor, they won't be able to help you. You will always be thinking "This person sucks!! I won't do what they say." Even if what they want you to do is good advice. You will always be confrontational with them, which will hamper you in the long run.

Personal suggestion... go ahead and find someone else. One that you feel comforatable with and respect their advice.

Thanks for the feedback. I've started the process of changing doctors. I've been in conversation with the doctor too, about why I want to change and he's been good. As it turns out, I may stay in the group therapy he leads because I've gotten a lot out of their stories and their feedback. And the doctor seems better in the group than one on one. We'll see how it goes.
