Topomax

Postby nowheregirl » Tue Jun 28, 2011 3:54 pm

Hi, I'm taking topomax, or I guess I should say, I was taking topomax. I just stopped taking it because my lips were getting all dried up and cracking and it felt like my sinuses were going through some changes that were making them feel strange like kinda opening and closing I think. I freaked out at night too because I felt like I couldn't swallow and then I would get really anxious.

I just wondered if anyone else has had any experiences with it?

Thanks,
Nowheregirl

You should talk to your doc about a suitable replacement.

thanks crazymonkey,

Oh, I did talk to her, but she let me keep taking them and I have another appt with her, but I got scared to keep taking them.

I left her a message. I just wondered if anyone else has had this type of problem on topomax.

I have a hard time taking the meds because I am really sensitive to them. I got the lamictal rash and had to come off of it and it seems like every one I like causes me problems.

Topamax was my main drug for the longest time. It never caused any of the problems you're describing. It did change the way everything tasted and gave me nasty acne, though.
Blame it on me, but know that I won't regret one iota.

I'm currently on 200mg of Topomax...

Never had that problem.
It was rough to start on... Made me feel crappy for like 2 weeks, but then it stopped.
Makes artificial sweetner taste bad and if I have too much caffeine my face and/or hands will go numb, but other than that I like it.
I function really well, don't feel sedated... it's been good...

BTW... just like as a side note... You shouldn't stop taking meds like that unless your doc says you can.
I've had meds I had to stop because of side effects. Horrifying nightmares, and things antipsychotics do to me, but I got approval for it before stopping. Just stopping like that, and then having to start again can be really rough on your body... Just saying... I've been on and off meds enough to know it does some weird things...

I took Topamax for over five years. I never had any problems with chapped lips, but I did notice that I had problems with overheating and needing more water (possibly related to lip chapping). I got really, really bad sinus infections and ear infections while I was taking Topamax, but found that it was helpful to get on an allergy medicine simultaneously and at any hint of infection to head straight to the doctor. Overall, Topamax wasn't a bad drug to be on. For me, the biggest side effects were weight loss (I lost over 40 pounds the first year I was on it), hair loss, and I have lost the ability to spell and do math consistently.

SmileXx,

I did already go off of it. My body is ok so far. My lips are better now and I can breathe and sleep at night now so I think I'm ok. I wonder about going back on it though, but, like LittleRedDog, maybe I could with allergy medicine. I think I'm non-compliant and have issues with taking medicine too.

LittleRedDog- I did have an ear infection too when I started the medication and cokes tasted really gross and I couldn't remember words sometimes but it helped me lose the 50 lbs I gained when I was on seroquel and then risperidral too.

Oh and I was only on 50 mg. of topomax (that's hardly anything).

Ladyswan, thanks, that wasn't one of my problems. It's weird how we all are different like that.

I appreciate that you guys took the time to answer my question. Thanks so much.
