My husband was just released from an involuntary stay at a local hospital, and he has been diagnosed with bipolar 1. I am very scared and want so bad to help him and our beautiful family...but where do i start????

Hi,
I think just being supportive is all you can do. The MH workers will be working with him to manage any symptoms. It is good he is getting help. It is good there is some type of diagnosis to work with as well. I take it he is now on medications. They work quite well for many people with bipolar and allow them to live a relatively normal existence.

I agree that being suportive is important. He will also be dealing with coming to terms with this diagnosis. Please try not to be scared tho, with meds and support he could well be well and stable for most of the time, although it sometimes can take time to get the right med combo. Make sure both you and he are educated about biolar and what it means to have the diagnosis. I am Bipoplar 1 and also did a group where bipolar was explained and we worked on a different topic each week. If anything like that is available then I would advise him doing that as well. Finally trust his MH team. Good luck.
