Whenever I stop my medications abruptly it does not seem to take long until I'm sent careening into a hypomanic state. Has anyone else experienced this?

not so much the hypomanic episodes, but the hostility, anxiety and rumination aspects of it i catch within in two days if not less. i'm suffering withdrawals as we speak, as my meds have been discontinued until childbirth (could happen anytime in the next two weeks). i am dizzy, clumsy and just a plain ol bitch to everyone i'm around. it SUCKS.

I took meds for 29 years and then developed tremors and a high ANA. Both my MD and psychiatrist suggested that I take a full med holiday. Within 3 weeks, mania began returning and I had to go back on meds. Formost people, takeing mood stabilizers for life is necessary for stability.

Me too. I stopped lithium one time and had a hypomanic/manic episode within 6 weeks. Same happened when I discontinued depakote... Right now I'm coming off abilify but still taking lithium and my mood is climbing a little.
Meds most likely will be a life time thing, unfortunately.
