Lamictal/lamotrigine and seeing things?

Postby keylimepie » Fri Dec 03, 2010 4:30 am

To start- I am bp II, so this isn't normal for me. Lol but pretty soon after getting up to 100 mg of lamotrigine I start seeing what looks like white light or black blobs moving in the background, shadows sort of appearing and then going away, things appearing to move even though they didn't and tonight even what looked like someone on the side of the road who was gone moments later. None of this is normal for me and my moods are actually pretty stable. I find info on this drug causing visual disturbances, but this is a bit much! Anyone dealt with this?

I'm not on either of those so I cant really comment, but I noticed now on my max doses that I see strange things a lot. Random moving things that when you quickly turn.. isn't moving. Or something that has been sitting in the corner forever suddenly grabs your eye because it moved or flashed. Its getting annoying when your watching TV and you can see random things moving or doing stuff enough to make you look at them.

However I have read lamotrigine causes people to hallucinate.

Very annoying. The computer is a big one for me. I have to just ignore it. And it all comes and goes. My friend said lithium did that to her as well and I'm on that, too.

Yea I'm on lithium, 2000mg, and I have been noticing a lot of that stuff. Don't know if there's anything that can be done about it.. but I'm sick of having random things grab my attention like that when it never would have normally. I also notice things that should look straight don't look straight or even move slightly as I'm trying to look at it...

Not whining, just wondering if anyone knows why haha.

Probably because it is working in our brains which process stimuli.

It's improved some for me, which is good as I'm feeling really stable right now. The addition of the lamotrigine really helped. That said stable feels weird...

Ewww...

I was on Lamotragine for a while and didn't like it at all.
If you're finding the side effects are too much to hadle, talk to your shrink or gp and ask about getting you on something else.
There's tons of meds for Bipolar, I know; I tried lots myself

The trick is finding something that works FOR YOU, not against you. Makes you better, not worse. You know what I mean?

Don't stop taking you meds without your doctors ceoncent by any means; but do ask about trying something else if you're not comfortable with your medication. You need to feel good on your meds (not bad) the first year of it is always the hardest though. Figuring out what you need and your doesage, ect...

Hang in there. Britghter days are a head :D communication is the key

Gluck!

Oh my goodness!
I thought I was the only one. :)
I take Lamictal and Seroquel. The moment I started on Lamictal, I kept seeing 'shadow people', as I call them. It'll look like someone is waving from me on the side of the road and I'll look, but no one is there. Or that a car is about to collide with my driver's side door, but there is no car. Or little skittery things on the floor (like ants on speed). I was started with 25mg and didn't really think it was the Lamictal because it was such a small dose. So far, it's escalated to hearing my name being called, music, and continuing to see things move. I also smell fabreeze wherever I go....it's strange, but hey, everything smells good right? :)
I just had my dose upped to 50mg yesterday, and I still see these things. My psychologist either thinks I'm kidding, or just doesn't care. He told me "Well, if the voices tell you to do something, don't do it!" then laughed and walked away. My psychiatrist doesn't think it's the drugs, but believes I'm actually bipolar I instead of bipolar NOS.... Who knows? It's like a crazy merry go round with the assumptions and diagnosis.
Good luck! And know you aren't alone in these happenings! :)

I'm not on lamictal, but on lithium. When I first started it, I was also on geodon, an antipsychotic. No problems then....but I ended up getting off the geodon, and then I started seeing things again... not the horrible scary things I saw before starting meds, yay for that. But, just like shadows I guess, out of the corner of my eye. I was constantly "seeing" one of my kids walking through the room past me, when there was no one there, stuff like that. I know that hallucinations are one of the many side effects of lithium though, so I chalked it up to that. Probably the same thing I'm sure.
