How do I overcome seeing negative outcomes?

Postby Synergy42 » Tue Dec 27, 2022 12:08 am

I posted a similar post just now to Anger Management, but I can't find it. So I'll try here.

My sister and I have had communication problems for decades. We say something seemingly harmless and the other person gets their feelings hurt so bad it's unbearable. I have cut myself off from my sister at least three times, for close to a year each time.

Now we have cheerfully agreed to go to group therapy together every other week, starting in mid-January 2023. Each of us will see her own private therapist the following week after the group counseling.

I tend to see a very negative outcome to a lot of things. Does anyone have any ideas how I can overcome this trait? I'm a bit apprehensive about our group counseling because of this. My diagnosis is bipolar II, and I am pretty well balanced, but still see my psychiatrist once a month. She says I'm doing very well.

Also, I need to know how to change my email address for this bipolar forum.

I think private therapy will do the most good. Try and approach the negativity directly. I have a friend who is a therapist and she is very negative. She sees a therapist and does not respond well to any suggestion she might become more social and go over these events with her therapist as a means of identifying needed changes. Her depression often prohibits therapy that is meant to help the depression, not surprisingly.

I hope private therapy will be the key.
