When I was recovering in the hospital for a couple of months staring at the white ceiling tiles, they put me on Melatonin.
A hospital is active 24/7, there is always beeping noises and the feeding/breathing tubes turned me into a mouth-breather. My mouth was always dry.
I really didn't notice any help sleeping from the Melatonin as they woke me up every 4 hours to take my vitals, administer meds, draw blood & reposition me, etc.
I couldn't wait to lie in my own bed at home with my cat again. I would dream of looking at white ceiling tiles.
My mild sleep apnea got much worse (82 events per hour avg) and after discharge, I was given a CPAP machine. I trained myself to be a nose-breather again. Now I find it hard to sleep without the CPAP.
I am grateful for the staff that saved my life. It is good to be alive. I no longer take Melatonin and not sure if it really ever did anything for me.
Some of my room-mates at the hospital worked for a large local company that handed out Melatonin like candy when they had an upcoming 'fireman shift' or trans-oceanic flight for business.
It made me realize that I was pretty lucky not to have a job that put my obligations to them over my health.
