I have great gaps during my manic episodes it’s like the memory doesn’t write properly and it feels like every manic episode damaged my ability to memorize past events further I know the gist of what happened but not details but the questions I’m asking are first is this bipolar to disassociate from manias and secondly do I even want to remember?
you cannot choose the hand you are dealt, but you can choose how you play the hand.

Hi Crawling,
First, I want to say I sympathize with you and your condition. We all experience our bipolar conditions differently in our own unique ways. I don't dissociate myself, but it seems that this is not uncommon at all for people experiencing intense mania. I think you're perfectly "normal" in that sense. Hey there's something to lift you up a bit. You're actually pretty normal in that way. I think we could all be normal if we just knew enough of the other people out there like us that are sure to exist. There's literally millions of bipolar people in the US alone. There's probably a normal in there for all of us. Lol
I've read a lot (a lot!) of bipolar peoples' experiences on all of these message boards around the web and I don't think what you are describing is all that abnormal really. None of this wouldn't be expected for anyone who experiences true mania on the scale you and I have. But please talk to your doctor, if you haven't already, about the dissociation. They need to know about that to help you. And I think there's quite a lot that they can do to help you manage all this better.
Take care

A small contribution I'm afraid

I am on psychotics and your description rang a bell with me. I have a general memory only of anything up to 10 - 14 days - then nothing. During that time I have no detailed memory. Like others I have met with Bipolar, memory disturbance can be an issue.

Thank you both for your replies, i do indeed have intense manias so it’s good but sad to know I’m not alone. its just hard when friends say remember when you did this and I’m like no not at all.
