Onset of mania when starting anti-depressant &/or Rexalti?

Postby RainbowEyes » Mon Feb 04, 2019 6:30 pm

Hello,
I saw a new doctor last week for help with symptoms of depression after trying to wean myself off of Cymbalta because I didn't have health insurance. He said he thinks I have Major Depression and PTSD and started me back on Cymbalta 60mg plus Rexalti 0.5mg. I was previously diagnosed w Bipolar II but this new dr thinks my episode years ago wasn't mania but was situational in nature as I had a lot of stressors happen at the same time. Anyway, I have slept <=5 hrs/night for the last 6 nights and no sleep last night. I'm wide awake. I've missed 3 days of work. Racing thoughts, increased talking and really amped up in general. I just got off the phone w dr office & have an appt tomorrow as he is not in the office on Mondays.
I read that anti depressants can trigger a manic state and wondering if anyone has experienced that? I am wondering if it is an adverse affect of the meds or does it signify a Bipolar diagnosis. I don't expect medical diagnoses just wanted to reach out and see if anyone has experienced this.
And any advice on what to do until I see the dr to kind of calm things down?
I took benadryl last night and it did nothing for sleep which is weird because that usually helps me.
Thanks for reading!

I became manic AF after being on Effexor for 4 months. All the classic symptoms. ITR's like I became a different person, A mood stabilizer was added and eventually I decided to go off the Effexor (I was being treated for PTSD), because the emergence of bipolar symptoms was a lot more pressing and difficult to manage while taking an Anti-D.

I think I had the same thing happen with Effexor now that I think about it.
How long did it take to figure out which meds work?
I'm anxious because I need to be able to work.

for me its not a matter of what meds work, but which ones work right now. they're constantly being adjusted. I've added lithium, then went off it, then added it again etc

I was on lexapro for 2 days when it made me manic. I tried fluoxetine a few years later that seemed fine and helped, but I forgot to take it one day and was manic by the next morning. I've now been on wellbutrin for over a year and haven't had any issues, but antidepressants are techerous territory with bipolar disorder, but also depends on the person!
