Inpatient Rehab for Substance Abuse/Mental Illness

Postby Sm123 » Fri Aug 17, 2018 5:12 am

Has anyone voluntarily got treatment at a inpatient Rehab for 30 days - for dual diagnois and for helping with Bipolar? (Not a pysch hospital) If so any feedback good or bad?

I have had a tramatic couple years in all aspects of my life and it has triggered alot of feelings of shame, abandonment, depression (extreme - not suicidal). I have taken time off work utilizing short term disability. I have been stable for most of my adult life - besides periods of depression.

However I am at the point where I need to resolve childhood trauma, deal with my moods, and learn how to cope without self medicating with alcohol, eating, self isolation etc. I wouldnt say I am an alcoholic but I have abused it these past few years and I come from alcoholism and had a dyfunctional childhood.

In looking at treatment centers they seem to offer alot in terms of counseling, group therapy, and a place to focus solely on recovery.

I am just starting my research and wanted others thoughts.

Thanks -

I would suggest not doing inpatient unless it's an emergency. Most of the times I've gone it's tolerable but not enjoyable. Depends on the staff and other patients.
A good psychologist and psychiatrist and do some reading in the comfort of your own place. I suggest The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide.
Be kind to everyone you come across because you never know who’s suffering inside.

With me it became an emergency. The substance abuse has to be ended before they can treat you mentally. A drug or alcohol-addled mind won't be open to reasoning or therapy.
Once stabilized, the treatment will begin. I did a week of detox before I was admitted to rehab.
I was dual-diagnosis as well. Alcoholic and delusional (and depressed). At first, I thought they were labelling me dual-diagnosis because there was nothing that they could do for me and I would be discharged. I was scared out of my wits and probably did not have another chance at recovery left inside me. This was the last house on the block.

I was able to complete the detox, inpatient, outpatient and aftercare programs. I continued with AA/NA and therapy at a mental health facility as an after-aftercare.
I was on low-dosages of medications for awhile after that to take the edge off my anxiety and depression. The same meds treated both. This allowed me to relax and not seek the solace of alcohol. I had been self-medicating with drugs and alcohol for many years.
The therapy started out intensely, then backed off as I was getting better.
A dollar in the basket for coffee at an AA/NA meeting was lots cheaper than professional help. I also attended EA (emotions anonymous) meetings to see what they were about. The 12-steps and the members in the room helped me in my recovery.
Once the haze of alcohol and drugs was lifted, I was teachable and could be reckoned with. Recovery is a process and not an event. It may not be 'enjoyable', but you can look forward to recovery and health instead of addiction and misery.
Best of luck to you. :D
