Lithium and Alcohol Use

Postby saffikeagan » Thu Aug 09, 2018 1:50 am

So I started taking lithium a little over a year ago. I progressed up to 900mg and was in the therapeutic range. I stayed on it about 10 months, but could not deal with feeling completely out of it all the time. I stopped drinking on lithium last September, and never felt the urge to drink again. However, now that I'm totally off lithium, I'm feeling the urge to drink again. Has anyone heard of taking a low-level non-therapeutic dose to provide a small level of mood stabilization and curb any addictive personality traits?

I'm not sure Lithium technically curbs addiction. It does lower your mania and depression and that's possibly why you're craving alcohol to calm your nerves now. You could try Lamictal if Lithium made you feel weird. I think you're not supposed to drink much on Lamictal too if that would help you stop.
Be kind to everyone you come across because you never know who’s suffering inside.
