I've been trying to find a psychiatrist in New Orleans. I've found 3 that are taking new patients, but when they see my health questionnaire they tell me that they won't take me as a new patient since I've previously been hospitalized. Is this really weird and messed up or am I missing something? The only thing I can think of is that they want to reduce their liability exposure since I believe I read somewhere that the majority of suicides end up creating a lawsuit.

Unfortunately this isn't unheard of. I have gotten turned down by a few different practices because I have been hospitalized as well. It is messed up, but it does happen.

I'm really sorry to hear you are having to deal with this. I don't know the "whys" of this happening to you, but it is not easy on you. I was hospitalized and the doctor who was making the rounds at the hospital (psych ward) took me as a possible new patient. I could decide who I was going to see and even decide on my own if I would continue treatment. Later I got hospitalized 3 more times, making it a total of 4 times hospitalized. Once was when I OD and was in the ER. I am glad he didn't drop me. Where would I be? Please search all avenues until you get what help you are in need of. Keep us updated on this thread if you are able to.

From the doctors I've had over the last seven to eight years some of them do not like to take bipolar patients because of the elevated risk of violence. Sounds to me like they're just making excuses. I have been told by doctors they do not want to deal with bipolar patients because of the risk of violence and assault. Plus most of them are medication resistant so they feel like they are losing the battle.
