Weight gain and clothes

Postby voracious_lemon » Sat Feb 10, 2018 11:36 pm

Hey guys,
We all know most bipolar meds cause weight gain. Ill cut to the chase. Clozapine made me fat and I have probably $1000 of clothes, ski gear, running stuff, etc that dont fit me anymore that I just put in trash bags. I dont know what to do with it. I could save it and dream of coming off clozapine, but I feel that's unrealistic. I could sell it on yard sales or online, but here in the middle of nowhere yard sales have never been too successful and I wouldn't know how to go about it online. I could donate it, which would be easy and I'd get the stuff out of my house, but that's a helluva lot of $$$ for me to just give away.
What would you do if/what have you done when your clothes stopped fitting?
All I saw was the Devil's soul
And it looked a helluva lot like my own

I'm overweight already, but I used to weigh even more before some years past. I gave away all my really nice clothes because I was buying new stuff and couldn't wear my regular pretty blouses. Well, I regretted that because I did end up losing enough weight to fit into those clothes I gave away. And they were expensive. We are not in financial circumstances right now where we can afford to buy really pretty and expensive clothes. I just wear what I have. So my advice is to think things through very carefully. But also, if you get rid of some clothes and you lose the weight, you can always treat yourself to nice and new outfits. Which is nice.

Personally, I don't like doing garage sales and I take my items to Goodwill or now my neighbor said her church is having a rummage sale, so I'll save it for them. If they don't have it soon, I'm taking it to Goodwill. I don't like clutter.

Just my thoughts on this.

I have also gained a ton of weight and I have so many clothes that don't fit anymore it is ridiculous. But I'm keeping them because I will fit into them again. I have already lost enough weight to fit into my smaller jeans and some shirts, so I'm glad I didn't give anything to salvation army or something.

I would say hold onto them, because you will lose the weight eventually. And you would regret it if you gave them away when you do. (I've done that before.)

What if you go through your stash and consider which clothes you like too much to get rid of and save those instead of keeping the whole stash? Do you have any friends in hard situations who could fit into your too small clothes? It might hurt less to give them away if you know the people can use them well. Out here we have sales groups on Facebook, you could try and see if there's such a thing in your area. You could try to sell them in bulk or the expensive ones piece by piece. In my experience keeping too many old clothes has the tendency to clutter your house a lot. Since my twin pregnancy I had a lot of too small clothes that I eventually had to sort out. I kept some but gave away most, 5 thrash bags full. And yes if you can afford to it's nice to treat yourself to new clothes as a reward for losing weight.

I gained 100 pounds on Risperadal and have yet to lose most of it on Geodon. I went up two shirt sizes and I don't even know how many pant sizes. I kept most of my pants. I kept the shirts I had interest in wearing (most of them were from high school days, of musicians that I wasn't into anymore, so I did get rid of them entirely).

I agree with what others have said about holding onto them. Never give up hope of losing the weight.

I like to do a clothes purge every once in a while. I've even thought about getting rid of all my clothes and buying new ones other than formal clothing. I mostly wear comfortable elastic athletic clothing now since it fits whether I gain or lose weight. T shirts and athletic shorts in the summer and sweatpants and hoodie in the winter. It's inexpensive, looks pretty good (especially if I'm in ok shape), and I don't feel bad about purging it after a few years. I do enjoy merino wool socks and underwear for hiking but don't splurge on fancy clothing.
Be kind to everyone you come across because you never know who’s suffering inside.

I've put on a fair amount of weight over the past 3 and a half years or so, since going back on antipsychotics (first on Seroquel and then more on Zyprexa), and I have lots of my 'skinny' clothes which don't fit anymore, mainly the bottom halves such as jeans, as that's where I've put on the most weight.

Personally, I've decided to keep them for now, stacked in the bottom of a couple of wardrobes, because they'd be expensive to replace and, as others have said, there's always the hope of losing the weight in the future. I'm in the middle of reducing my Zyprexa- I'm now on 10mg, due to reduce to 7.5mg soon- and I've already lost a couple of pounds. Hopefully the Zyprexa cut down will go well and I'll lose some more. Hope this helps somewhat. Hugs! x
