Intermittent Fasting and Meds

Postby z7z » Fri Feb 09, 2018 4:03 am

Anyone tried intermittent fasting? I am hesitant to have meds on an empty stomach. The most I've done is skipped breakfast and lunch and I was like Oscar the Grouch. :x
Limiting all my calories to dinner allows me to control my daily calorie intake. Trying to fight off the antipsychotic bloat as much as possible. Maybe just a light breakfast and lunch is a better idea.

I haven't attempted this myself, z7z, but eat breakfast (which is usually cereal), followed by a snack instead of lunch, and eat most of my calories in the evening. I tend to get especially hungry once I've had my Zyprexa, which I take around 6.30pm. I've definitely put on weight with my current meds regime, but not enough that my pdoc is concerned.

Maybe a light breakfast and lunch would be the way to go, and then if you manage ok with that, you could try the intermittent fasting. It'd probably be a good idea to check in with your pdoc or gdoc first, to make sure it's safe, and also to ensure that none of your meds need to be taken with food vs. on an empty stomach. Hope this helps, and let us know how you get on.

As Ennui pointed out, it is which meds you are taking. Some you have to take with food. I know Latuda has to be taken with 350 calories (of food, not beverages) or else it will not fully work. Like you'd only be getting half of your dose. And I really hated having to add an additional 350 calories every day, as I try to limit my caloric intake. And since it made me sleepy, I did not want to take it with my dinner.

I am only on Lamotrigine now, and I don't really eat much, and the food I do eat is very low in calories, and I seem to be doing fine with that. Have a talk with your pdoc about it. I also believe that intermittent fasting has good health benefits.

I replace one meal a day with a diet/protein shake. It has a low amount of calories but plenty of protein and lots of vitamins. It does keep me feeling like I am full. I only do this with one meal. Usually it's my dinner as I go to bed early and I usually wake up really hungry and have a nice decent breakfast. So while it's not fasting, it is a lowering of my amount of carbs and calorie intake.

Ive never tried fasting, but I know I get really nauseous if I take my meds without having something in my stomach. I think its the lithium because it has to be one of the meds I take twice a day, but not 100% sure on that.

I've been doing it for the past few months, but I take my meds to go to sleep. I do eat when I go to sleep, because I can't sleep on an empty stomach. I skip breakfast and eat about 4 or 5 hours after I've been awake, and then will eat before bed.

It really hasn't helped in the weight loss department. I think I may actually be eating bigger portions while doing it, so I guess I'm not doing it right
