How do you maintain self-care?

Postby TuesdayC » Mon Jul 31, 2017 7:21 am

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say I have a very hard time taking care of myself. Generally, I stop feeding myself because I'm too tired or don't care and I end up losing too much weight. How do you keep up with taking care of yourself? Looking for tips and tricks :)

I plan meals with friends.
That achieves many goals.
- I need to get out of bed.
- I need to shower.
- I need to put on clean clothes which means I need to do laundry.
- I need to put on my happy face because people don't like visiting a grouch.
- I have something to eat.

Either that, or I sit in front of the TV eating a relatively quick but nutritious meal. I don't care if I'm wearing yesterday's clothes because I'll probably dribble something on my shirt anyway. It is okay as long as today's food stain matches the color of yesterday's food stain.

I have good quality snack food. Try to not have junk food in the house.
- Bananas are easy to eat and you don't have to wash them.
- I eat vegetables raw... carrots, celery, green peppers,
...washing vegetables is for wimps. You need to eat your peck of dirt before you die.
- My weakness is sugar... I'll drink gallons of fruit juice if I have it and that's too much sugar.
...I put maple syrup on my yogurt... It's natural, sustainable and organic, but still sugar. Love it.

I'm full of useless advice tonight. If you found this helpful, then get further life skills advice on the morning TV talk shows.

Every morning I wish the sun wouldn't come up. But it does. And so I must carry on. So must we all. It is up to us as individuals. Nobody can do it for us.
It is not always possible to make someone's discomfort go away.
Sometimes, the best thing we can do is resist the urge to fix it and instead just say, "You, too?"

I've been not functioning, not maintaining, depressed, not leaving the house, eating, not eating, anorexic, hyper, overwhelmingly energetic.
So, aside of just aiming to feel good or at least a OK, admittedly I do have some specific routines. They're underlined by the fact that I'm still - after all the years, a bit afraid of loosing the grip.
I maintain, in order to function, and in order to move on. Though, some maintenance constantly eating 'funds' from moving on.

I try to force myself to socialize.
I also throw a lot of effort and time into new playlists and art projects, as I find them relaxing.
Mostly I just try not to spend too much time thinking.

Obviously dependant on my mood. If I am stable (which I have been for 3 weeks now which is actually quite good and an accomplishment for me) I make sure I am exercising 5 days a week and eating fairly clean which isn't always easy anyways, lol. If I am depressed I still try to force myself to at least workout and if I am not eating clean to at least make sure I am getting my vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables especially. I find it extremely hard to force myself to get out of the house when I am feeling depressed/anxious even if it just for a walk so sometimes it doesn't happen unfortunately. But I do try my best.

If it's possible, let loved ones know you're having a hard time. They can bring you food or help around the place to clean up, do laundry and things like that. I tell my husband and he sort of takes over the best he can do. If I can afford it, I hire a trusted cleaning person to literally help me clean and also to do things like fold clothes, put them away, anything I need help with. I'll admit that the only thing I do is take a walk (rarely, but I have done this), or I like to go to the mall (without any money or credit cards) and I look around, smell perfumes they give me sample cards of--things like this. I try to distract myself for a little while.
