Constipation and anti-psychotics

Postby David1999 » Thu Jul 20, 2017 8:02 pm

I've found myself being very constipated on all four antipsychotics which I have been on (Abilify, Seroquel, Risperdal and Zyprexa). Seroquel being the worst out of the four and Risperdal being the least.
I'm currently prescribed laxatives to deal with this. I've tried eating a fibre-high diet and it simply didn't cut it.
Do you have this experience with antipsychotics and what measures do you take to deal with this?
Unmedicated perfection.

Yes, I've found myself having this problem whenever I've been on antipsychotics on a more long-term basis (I've been on Zyprexa and Seroquel since my psychotic break last year). It's distressing, not to mention embarrassing to talk about.

What helps me is eating a potion of high fibre cereal when I get up, and making sure I'm hydrated throughout the day. I've also taken fibre drinks (called Fybogel) and laxatives, as a last resort.

Hope this helps and you get relief from this issue soon.

You express the problem in such politically correct language.
I want to scream obscenities and describe my experience in the most colorful terms but know I will receive a rebuke from the moderators and may alienate nice people with a gentle disposition and sensitive spirit...

All I will say is that over the years when someone has told me "You are full of ...." I was able to listen quietly, nod my head in agreement and smile wryly.
It is not always possible to make someone's discomfort go away.
Sometimes, the best thing we can do is resist the urge to fix it and instead just say, "You, too?"
