Life Insurance?

Postby Bi-Polar Bear » Wed Jan 18, 2017 11:47 am

Hi guys,

I am a bit stuck! Firstly, I have Bipolar I Disorder. I am due to give birth in a few weeks to my first baby and I thought I should finally get around to arranging life insurance for myself so that my husband and daughter aren't financially stuck for certain things if I pass away at any point. I applied to one company and explained my illness and how it has affected me in the past, and also explained how I have been largely stable since finding the right medication, I am med-compliant, I have not had suicidal thoughts or self-harmed etc since then, never missed work, not had any manic episodes, etc etc. They spent a few days reviewing my application and eventually refused to insure me at all.

Has anyone had any luck getting life insurance (in the UK specifically) with this disorder and if so which company did you go with and is there anything I can do to help my case?

Hi bear,

I do have life insurance but I got it years ago before I was diagnosed. However recently I went on holiday and wanted to get insurance. It was a nightmare. There are specialist companies that would do it.... at s big premium. Bipolar uk site has links for some of them. I'm pretty sure they did other insurance as well as travel. In the end rather than it cost me £300-400 I paid a normal £50 and they won't cover an mefical stuff caused by bipolar. Not the best scenario.
Sorry I can't offer any other help and let us know if you find any sensible quotes....

Hi Eilatan! Thank you for sharing your experience with me. I'll have a look at the Bipolar UK site. I wonder if, like for your travel insurance, I could find a company that would insure me for everything other than mental-health-related stuff... Might be a case of ringing round and using my best persuasion tactics. Definitely not ideal but I simply can't afford a massive premium! I'll carry on searching and definitely update this post if I find anything good...

It was insureandgo who insured me for everything apart from pre existing conditions namely bipolar. They just flat out don't cover it. X
