Thorazine

Postby Brand New » Tue Nov 28, 2006 10:02 pm

Anyone ever been on this? I recently had my first psychotic break, and the hospital upon my release gave me a prescription for this. Apparently they put me on a low dose but..

I was talking to my mother about it, she scared the hell out of me about the "thorazine shuffle" where it makes your joints stiff and makes you walk like a zombie supposedly.

Any insight/opinions from anyone who's ever been on this would be greatly appreciated.

You came to the right place. I have a great deal of experience with this drug. I had to take it for many years due to the strength of my delusions from bipolar. It is a great medicine to slow the brain and body down. It will make the craziest person look normal. I hated it for various reasons. For me it shut down the delisions and just about all other thinking as well. At the time. I may have needed it. It was that it just tie me to the wall.

The class of drugs that Thorizine is in often cause weight gain. I gained over 100 pounds. They also hinder a person having an orgasm when having sex. The shuffle is common with heavy dosages. You will not notice it, but a few people might. Yes, it did turn me in a zombie. Some people love it and do well with it though. You may need to take it for a while. I wonder when they keep people on it for years or a lifetime. It is often used in hospitals to keep people from doing anything. You do not need much of a medical staff when you put the patients on heavy dosages of Thorazine.

On my website I talk about more experiences with this drug. I also have a link there that will give you medical facts about this drug or any other.

Good Luck,
Jim S

Thank you for the reply. See that's the thing.. I'm an active person, I enjoy going out with friends and just being out in the world in general. I really don't want it to hinder anything of the sort.

I know this is going to sound really self-conscious, but I don't want to gain any weight at ALL. That seems to be a problem with several of the bi-polar medications I've tried, and keeps me from using them. And honestly, the good purpose that this medication serves, doesn't seem worth all the side effects it has... especially in part the whole "shuffle".

I guess it's just not the drug for me, as I'm currently on Lithium, but I'm not taking any anti-psychotic at the moment.

Any other experiences/opinions/objectives are certainly welcome.

yea, anti psychs make me sick, abilify gave me that whole zombie thing, i lost my moter skills while i was on it, was always tense, and had more voices telling me to kill and hurt more, and then risperdal gave me hypoglycemia, it felt like i couldn't stand for more than thirty minutes, but anywho, the risp. worked, but then it made me sick in another way, which sucked, i'm on lamictal, it's an anticonvulsant, and from what i know it's like lithium, just calms down all those crazy nerves making you go up and down, or stay really down in my case, and tomorrow actuallyi have an appointment with a new psychiatrist and hopefully i'll get on a good benzo, they're the best for anxiety, for me, it's like i get anxiety, then depression, then psychosis, deadly i tell ya, but anywho, thanks for shareing and i hope everyday gets a lil brighter
somtimes, it's like i want to touch these lights, and give into them become them, just a flash for a moment~in this world
