Music for the Melancholy and Manic

Postby Surrealism » Wed Dec 10, 2014 1:44 am

Since I haven't seen a recent thread like this in this forum, and I'm kinda surprised, I figured I'd spark it.

It's been researched that we listen to mood-enforcing music when we're in any state. So...what's your choice of music, and why, when you're depressed versus when you're hypomanic/manic. Add links so we can expand our music base :D

When I'm trying to induce a stable or happier mood, my song of choice is the Rivers of Babylon played by Sublime. The whole album is one I listen to if I have a problem going to sleep, it's nice. Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m15o2dedabA

On the other hand, when I'm hypomanic, I love Mindless Self Indulgence. The speed of the music, the craziness of it, all of that. It's helped me get through boring summer classes, and they're great in concert.

Your turn :)

And if you go no one may follow,

Music that I find very grounding is the Gregorian Chant of the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HwcG3mYo5Kk

Or just google: Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos
and you will get lots of hits.

The Chant brings me peace inside when I'm raging or depressed.

hi

There are quite a few threads about music in general such as

Music To Mellow To
Music And Bipolar

There are quite a few others too but those are more recent ones.

However I think that you can never have too many music threads

I have posted quite a lot of tunes I like but the following are some ones which come to mind now :D There are different reasons for different songs but overall one thing I think I look for in songs when high is a big tune. I also like an interesting drum beat such as in the end of Homecoming. Or songs than I want to sing along too. Often my choice for songs when low is thoughtful lyrics or a powerful tune which touches my soul.

Manic Stuff

Sick Of Drugs - The Wildhearts
We Are Young - Fun Ft Janelle Monae
I Smile - Kirk Franklin
Because I Got High - Afroman
Homecoming - Green Day
Between The Raindrops - Martyn Joseph <3

Depressed Tunes

The Black Sea - OMD
Novacaine - Green Day
Turn me Tender Again - Martyn Joseph
All My Life - Evan Dando
Stay With Me - Erasure
That I Would Be Good - Alanis Morissette <3

There are zillions more I could post and they also tend to change but these are some examples. I personally think they are all wonderful tunes

Manic--definitely System of a Down. I listened to this pretty much constantly one summer when I was pretty consistently hypomanic. When I'm not I think, "Man, this is just crazy." Dubstep (genre) is another one. I used to go to a lot of those shows...

Depressed (TW)--Shining (especially when I'm in a mixed state), Lifelover, Dear Euphoria, Sopor Aeternus, Lykke Li...I'm depressed more than I'm manic, so I listen to more of this type of stuff...

I've mentioned him before but Asgeir's In The Silence album is a beautiful record, and in hypomania it's a crying-because-of-sheer-beauty-and-happiness record. Also, Kylie Minogue's happiest songs -- like The One, I Believe In You, Les Sex will do.

When I'm depressed I actually lose interest in music -- music is my life, and when I'm depressed I feel like my life goes away. So anything goes, with preference for slower stuff, like Enya.
Currently working on my upcoming signature.

I'm listening to this now. It's calming and the chanting is uplifting. I've found that I listen to swing and electro-swing when I'm in a good mood. More older genres when I'm trying to relax; Edith Piaf, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Red Nichols (great swing, got an album today for free ^.^ ), and Crosby, Still, Nash, and Young (especially my favorite).

Also, any version of Blue Moon. I love that song with all my heart. Billie Holiday's version is the best, alongside Yesterdays. My Morning Jacket comes in second for me :)

All I know is that when I was hypomanic for months all I listened to was reggaeton

And the correct answer is:

Euphoric Mania - Beach Boys, ABBA.
Agitated mania - The Woodstock Album.
Maybe a little Pink Floyd.

Can't handle Punk Rock or Kiss.
