Depakote and hair loss

Postby oreberry » Mon Aug 11, 2014 3:38 pm

I have been on Depakote (750 mg) for about 8 months and so far I have not had a problem with hair loss, but my hair is more wavy. Does this mean I am "home-free" as far as being susceptible to that particular side effect (hair loss) or could it start at a later time after a build-up; like say, 2 years? I am always checking my comb. Does anyone have an idea? Did it happen to them?

I've been on Depakine (Depakote XR) for almost two years now, no hair loss, my beard is much thicker though which makes me a happy chappy.

That's really interesting! and mine is more wavy, which I like. You have reassured me. Thank you. :)

Oh wait, you mean it got more wavy from Depakote? Because SO DID MINE. I thought it was age related tbh -- it didn't occur to me to put those two together. But yeah, from straight as a wire I went to having curly hair, which is, um, new :)

I lost all of my hair... unfortunately it happened years before I started taking depakote :)

EDIT: When will they come up with a drug which has increased hair growth as a side-effect?

They did. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoxidil

Originally, minoxidil was used exclusively as an oral drug (with the trade name 'Loniten') to treat high blood pressure. However, it was discovered to have an interesting side effect: hair growth.
