Bipolar spectrum vs definitions

Postby ElKahn » Thu Jul 24, 2014 7:21 pm

Alright, I often read about the different kinds of bipolar (I, II, cyclothymic (or III), IV(??), mixed, NOS...), but I'm wondering....ok, it's a spectrum, it's probably one of the most complex mental disorders and it can be tricky and difficult to understand what's really going on. Not to mention rapid cycling, ultra rapid cycling, ultradian, etc.
Do we really need these labels? Like, my doctor called it cyclothymic, and she once mentioned rapid cycling, then I get stuck with definitions and think that it looks more like bipolar II, and that phases are so irregular and unpredictable that sometimes it's hard to really figure out how I feel. All I know for sure is that they happen for no reason, but stress can trigger them. On a side note, if it's true that I have borderline traits, things get even more difficult since borderline mood swings are triggered by something, and that happens to me sometimes, except that people and situations don't trigger hypomania or depression (because those ones occur without a logical pattern), but anger and verbal aggressivity. But BPD is a completely different thing so I won't talk about it here in a post and forum about bipolar disorder.

In the end, we all struggle trying to reach stable moods.

Can bipolar labels be misleading and too schematic, and maybe even unnecessary for this kind of extremely complex disorder? I definitely think they are.
It's a confusing disorder and I still struggle to understand what's going on in my life on this chaotic rollercoaster that's driving me crazy.

I dont think the labels are for us. Its for the Dr's and therapists who use it to treat us accordingly . Me i never questioned what type BP i had, 1, 2 3 etc. I didnt care as long as i knew what was wrong with me. Just knowing i had BP made it easier for me to figure out how to learn to take care of myself.
More labels for me would require more money and time i dont have. Its hard enough dealing with myself without adding more to it.
Caution, dyslexic writer ahead.
Spell check please

IME it doesn't seem to matter what the label is. They just put people on as many pills as they can.
