How do you tell your work youre sick.

Postby itsabipolarlife » Tue Jul 15, 2014 4:02 pm

I work for a large bank in a pretty hard position to obtatin. My pysch asks to see me twice a month but I can only do once without being noticed. Its coming to the point now where I do have to see her twice a month , but how do I go about telling my boss that I am sick and need to see a doctor twice a month. I am worried that I will lose my job. My dad says if that happens we will sue them , but obviously if I lose my job they will not put down for medical reasons. I am just so confused and scared on how to go about this.

Anyone who has dealt with this please post! I need all the help I can get

Oh man, that sucks!! I don't have much to tell you, but if I were you I'd check national law that applies, bank policy on such matters, etc. Try and get as much information as you can. I don't know where you're from, but maybe the bank is required by law to allow you to see your psych. Try and find out if there are any other people at the bank with chronic illness (doesn't have to be MI). Ask them how they do it, if they have to fill in any forms or take something from the doctor to HR. As much information as you can gather!

This situation is very unfair, you really shouldn't have to be in that position! I hope you can find laws to back you up, health needs to come first! Best of luck!

I work in a high stress job as it is. When im having bad day or if i have appt's. I just let them know. I work in a very understanding place. Most at work know i got BP and if they dont they will find out sooner or later as im very open about it. They cant fire you because of a mental disorder. Its the behaviors of the disorder that they can fire you for. bad production, abusive language , being late etc.
I always try and get my appts away from work hours. I tell DR's my work hours and i pretty much tell them it has to be at my time away from work or its going to have to wait till the can get the times i need. but thats just me.
Caution, dyslexic writer ahead.

I am not working atm but used to work at a high level, stressful job. I made some ppl aware that I had issues (this was before formal diagnosis) but not everyone. Basically the consultant I reported to, medical staffing, the head of the department and his PA. I was allowed to go to my appts and they were also very good about sick leave (at the time I was really unstable). I believe it would have been difficult for them to be anything other than OK about it due to DDA but it was good they were supportive. I would tell those you have to without feeling like you need to tell everyone - you dont have to do that (unless you want to and think it would be helpful).

Hi there. I have often wondered about this and well more recently so. I too have a very high stress, high demanding job. Until lately I have always been a high functioning bi-polar, anxiety driven person.

Lately I have been questioning a lot on what I can handle these days and wonder if I have to tell my employer anything at all about my mental status. I do take a lot of time off for doctor visits. I do have time off to take them, but we do have rules on number of days, etc. There has also been times where I just couldn't make it in to work at all cause I knew I couldn't deal with any pressure or anyone at the time.
I do worry about this and have an appointment with my doc in a week or so. If I uncover anything that could be of any use I will post back. I am not sure I really want most people to know my ills anyway, just trying to find an even keel to be able to function as well as I need to.

Good luck to you. :!:
