meds and a few drinks

Postby invicta » Mon Jul 14, 2014 9:55 pm

First thing's first: I have an appointment with my p-doc a week from today and I will be asking her about this. But in the meantime, I'd like some opinions from you guys, if possible.

I have a wedding in a couple of weeks. I'd like to have a few drinks. I don't want to get hammered or anything like that, I'd just like to have a glass of wine at dinner, maybe a glass of whiskey or Port wine after. Nothing extreme! I'm just not sure if that's possible with meds. Last time I was at a wedding I was only taking Venlafaxine, I drank way too much and found out just what "projectile vomiting" means... :?

I take lithium (400mg with breakfast + 400mg with dinner), quetiapine (75mg before bed) and diazepam (5mg before bed). The diazepam is what's worrying me most from what I've read online.

Does anyone have any personal experience with these meds and a few drinks? Any insight will be greatly appreciated!

Diazepam might be very dangerous. I've lost consiousness after combination Diazepam+100 gr vodka. I just I've dropped to the dancefloor while I've been dancing. I don't remember anything. My advice is to not mix Diazepam with wiskey. I've never had problems with Diazepam + wine, but be careful because it makes effects of the alcochol stronger. A glass of wine and Diazepam is okay.

What Nephilim said, really. But it depends on a lot of things, not the least of which is your personal tolerance for both.

My suggestion would be to drink very, very slowly. If you can make a glass of wine last 3 hours, you shouldn't have any problems with it sneaking up on you, or being unable to slow down in time. That's the good news. The bad news is you'll probably have to pretend-toast a lot :)

Wine is a mocker, and strong drink is raging.
Whoever is deceived thereby is a fool.

I don't take your prescriptions, but I have my own coctail of meds.
I am able to have one glass of beer or wine on occasion.
But I limit myself strictly to one.

I find that with my particular mix of meds alcohol doesn't "work" for me anymore. I used to drink quite a lot, self-medicating I'm told, and enjoyed the buzz my good old Captain and Cokes used to provide. I've tried having a couple of drinks now and then and all I get is dizzy and a headache. I'm sure that I could have a glass of wine with dinner or at a wedding...but I'll stick to soda or water and avoid the headache all together.

You should probably look into drug/alcohol interactions for your particular cocktail of meds before trying this.

I was on Invega for a while before I found out that there had been some reported cases of respiratory failure associated with alcohol.

Thanks so much for all your replies, guys!! :)

I have looked online about this. It seems that lithium masks the alcohol effects, so you'll get drunk and don't notice. Quetiapine basically "just" gives you a bad hangover. Diazepam is the tricky one. Apparently, one beer equals about 3, you get amnesia and it's likely you'll pass out. If you're alone, this could be dangerous, since you could stop breathing (respiratory failure, just like Nihilist said). Not nice!

I think I'll try having a glass of wine with dinner. I'm also thinking about letting one of my friends know and asking them to keep an eye. I'm afraid I'll loose track of how much I'm drinking, it seems to be pretty common with diazepam. I think this is the safest. Hopefully, my doc will agree. Since "dinner" will probably start around 3pm I'll have lots of time before taking those meds. I hope! ;)

Nephilim, just one question: when that happened to you, did you take the diazepam at the same time with the vodka? Let me know if you remember, please!

Thank you guys a lot!

Not at the same time. I have prescribed Diazepam and I simply I've taken my dose and then I went to a disco with my friends and I drank vodka there.
the worst of Diazepam + alcochol mix is that you might not have memories on the next day, but I'm pretty sure you want to remember that day so be careful :)

Thanks Nephilim! I was planning on the opposite - drinking and then taking my meds before bed. But I've read lots of horrifying stories online from people who were on diazepam and drinking. Doesn't sound fun at all! I do want to remember the day, I just wanted to have a couple of drinks too. :| I guess I'll see what my doctor says.

Thanks! :D

Does it say something about my drinking habits when everytime I'm suggested another drug to try, my first question is how it reacts with alcohol.. <<;

Most of the stuff I've got for use-as-necessary now don't react with alcohol. The ones that do are quite obvious ones, and I don't want to break my liver, yet.

Meds? Went feral. So far nothing has given me the equal of highs on daily basis.
