Depression without hating yourself

Postby Kamia » Tue Jul 08, 2014 6:20 pm

Hi all

Is it possible to have depression (the melancholic kind) without having any feelings of guilt or self-hatred? I don't feel anything about myself and can't no matter how much I try, or about anything else. No opinions or feelings, just confusion and numbness.
That's what life's about man, good times, a little salad.

I've had depressions throughout my life, and never felt self-hatred or any extra guilt... so I would say that it's possible.

Well, that's basically what I get. I *used* to get the self-hatred/guilt depressions, then did 2 years of therapy and all that went away. Sadly depression as a bell jar/numbness/heaviness didn't.
Currently working on my upcoming signature.

I certainly recognise that type of flat/numb feeling from my depressions, so as other people have said, it can happen. For me, the 'nothingness' and heaviness usually creeps in as I'm entering or getting out of an episode, so personally, it probably tends to hit on the 'milder' end of my depression scale (even though it feels nothing like mild at the time!)

The more entrenched the depression becomes, the more tortured and self-destructive my thinking and emotions generally turn. That's just my experience, however.

I hope you get the treatment you need, theglassbuddha, and it lifts very soon. Take care x

Thank you for your replies. And I'm sorry you guys also go through this and worse, much worse from what I've read, my heart goes out to you all. It's very reassuring to find sanctuary here on this forum, I'm really grateful for that even if I'm just reading and not posting. x

I would agree this is possible. For me, when I am depressed but not at my very worst I quite often feel flat and low but not hating of myself. It is when things progress that I start with the self hatred and things like suicidal thinking. I think it is possible for sure to have the kind of depression that you are describing.
