I certainly recognise that type of flat/numb feeling from my depressions, so as other people have said, it can happen. For me, the 'nothingness' and heaviness usually creeps in as I'm entering or getting out of an episode, so personally, it probably tends to hit on the 'milder' end of my depression scale (even though it feels nothing like mild at the time!)
The more entrenched the depression becomes, the more tortured and self-destructive my thinking and emotions generally turn. That's just my experience, however.
