maintenance ECT

Postby keenie » Sun Jun 08, 2014 5:05 pm

Hey all.

I recently moved area and therefore have a new psychiatrist. I like him and he seems to understand me pretty well. I have just had 12 lots of ECT and for the first time ever the psych has suggested maintenance ECT. So I would keep having it, about once per month for the rest of my life, to keep me well (in theory). I really hate having ECT (it just gives me the creeps), but it has always worked very well for me- it has literally saved my life several times over.

Has anyone ever had maintenance ECT or know of anyone who has? Was it effective? I'm just trying to weigh up the horror of having it every month versus the likely effectiveness. I suppose the only way to really know is to try it :(

Cheers, keenie

I'm no expert Keenie, but I believe ECT is used when all medication hasn't helped.
The good news is you have found something that works for you. I'm glad for you.
I have never heard of maintenance ECT. You can be the Forum expert on this treatment.

I hope life keeps improving for you.

Take care,

Hey!

Yeah, I have had ECT previously, and it's basically a last resort, when medication isn't helping. It has always worked well for me, but I have never had maintenance ECT before. I guess it's a case of giving it a go and keeping my fingers crossed. I will keep people updated on how it goes!

Cheers, keenie
