Mental confusion in dysphoric mania - is it normal?

Postby right310 » Sat May 31, 2014 10:11 am

is it normal to have mental confusion and memory problems during dysphoric mania (mixed state)?

I am not talking about confusion as a side effect from meds, I mean just being mentally confused about yourself and time and place just from the dysphoric mania?

is it normal for this confusion to last for months (if no treatment is given for the dysphoric mania)....and is it likely for the confusion and memory problems to dissappear or improve when starting meds (even though many bipolar meds themselves have confusion and memory problems listed as possible side effect)?

which bipolar medication do you think would be best for correcting the confusion and memory loss associated with dysphoric mania (and is least likely to cause more confusion and memory loss)?

not to say it's normal but i do get confused and lose time a lot in that state. once, i paced around in my room for hours not knowing what to do with all the thoughts in my head, i lost almost a week feeling confused. the feeling for me comes and goes for a few months. i can function but not really get lots of stuff done because of that unsettling and awful feeling you get in that state.
although as a disclaimer, i was just recently diagnosed based on behaviours and feelings from my past 3 years. i am not sure whether it will be a common occurrence or just the initial onset of the disorder.

as for the meds part of the question, i have no answer for you. i decide to try and manage on my own before trying meds so...

everybody is different in regards to how they are experiencing and reacting to life in general. it might be a better idea to talk to your pdoc about meds since they would know more and could help with your situation.
i hope you find your answer soon.

what about the type of confusion where you, for a split-second, think you're in your car when you're actually in the shower, is it normal?
