What med works best in these circumstances?

Postby Crawling » Mon May 26, 2014 7:13 am

Or mix of meds. I am on a severely psychotic depression my current meds 30mg arirpiprazole and 400mg sodium valproate are not cutting it since I was switched off olanzapine and depakote I've been I'll. My doctor won't prescribe lamotrigene (lamictal) so what meds are best to cure a psychotic depressive episode?

Sorry to hear things are still difficult for you. I think that with meds they vary so much between ppl - for example aripiprazole has worked brilliantly for me wrt psychosis but it sounds like it is not working for you much at all. I think that it is worth talking more to your Dr about what to do. Do you know why they dont want to try lamotrigine? Could be worth asking. I think unfortunately it is going to be a case of trial and error to find something which works for you. I wish it was easier than that.

He said he doesn't like the med because of the risk of steven Johnson syndrome. Thank you for replying.

It took a very long time to get my meds sorted out and what I did find that various combinations that worked for other people did not work for me and vice versa. Lamotrigine has been a very good drug for me in many ways. I am on a fairly high dose at 400mg pd but it has really helped my mood/depression and of course controls my epilepsy!!!!! With Schizoaffectives anti depressants can possibly make psychosis worse as in my case so I avoid them. I have just started lithium and my mood does feel better. I have noticed a definite toning down of my manic behaviour. O course I am on Seroquel and Asenapine as well which control various manifestations of my illness. Anyway all or none of these might work for you so get your docs advice. The doc may not like prescribing Lamotrigine because of the possibility of the dreaded rash.
