Postby yulisses » Wed May 21, 2014 9:20 pm

Hey I'm 29 having a long history of undiagnosed and untreated adhd until 18 years old. in the last years i had a lot of mental breakdowns last one last week where nobody could really tell whats going on. At thebeginnig of last week some senior psychiastric said he thinks its more than the adhd due to the severity of my moods (down especially), duration, impulsiveness and more and that is a comorbid with bi polar 2. sound familliar to someone? is there anyone here firstly dx for adhd and then bi polar? great day to all sorry for my mistakes in english

The label is less important than the treatment.
I hope you find a psychiatrist who knows his stuff and can prescribe some effective drugs.
It usually doesn't happen on the first try, but with a little trial and error, there is relief.

I hope all goes well for you,

Indeed, what Skilsaw said.Whether or not the treatment works is what's important. With the current state of the mental health science, it can be challenging find the right combination of meds but I expect some fairly rapid improvements in the next 5 years or so.

Although I've never been DX'd with ADHD, I'm sure the combination isn't unheard of.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with ADHD & BD as well, so no. It's not entirely unheard of :)

Treatment-wise Yulisses, I'm sure your psychiatrist is a very responsible person who knows a lot more about these things than I do, but you should ask about any ADHD medication he or she wants you to try, because some of it - like Ritalin - can be dangerous because of your BD. Likewise, some ADHD & BD medications directly counter-act each other.

Best of luck :)

Hi Sung,

I was first diagnosed with ADD and prescribed Adderall to treat it. By the end of the month, I was smack dab in the middle of full-blown mania. So long story short, they diagnosed me with Bipolar, as well. I ended up hospitalized and the whole nine yards.

Finally, they prescribed me Geodon and my sanity slowly returned. But I have to leave any and all stimulants alone. They took away my Adderall, which in my mania I thought was the greatest thing since PB&J. I had to quit smoking and quit drinking caffeinated (I think I spelled that wrong) drinks. I also quit drinking. This all happened at the same time. It was the worst January for me in the history of the world. Most of the time, I thought I was dying.

Finally the episode ended. They prescribed Strattera to me for the ADD. I've been on it about 3 years now. It's good. Of course it doesn't make me insanely happy as Adderall did, but it does help me with focus and concentration. I'm not late anymore. I make plans now, lol. It sounds funny, but before I was medicated, the only "plan" was to make it through the whole day in one piece.

I'm no doctor, but if you are sensitive to stimulants, be sure to tell your pdoc. They made me have the worst manic and then mixed episode that I have ever had. Best of luck and I hope you find what works for you!

I was diagnosed with cyclothymia first, but my therapist hinted that I probably had ADHD too. The most important thing my pdoc and therapist wanted was for me to treat the cyclothymia before the ADHD. I think that's because stimulants can cause mania.

I'm not so good lately with taking medication. Most of the time I don't take the ADD meds, and rarely do I take my mood stabilizer. When I do take my ADD medication, sometimes I get hypomania, but I recognize it and deal with it. I'M NOT AT ALL ADVOCATING what I'm doing. Just sharing my experience. But even when I was on the mood stabilizer, the ADD medication still triggered hypomania for me.

Some days it gets pretty difficult trying to deal with both diagnoses, especially when the medications' side effects seem to be fighting with each other. The mood stabilizer made me "slow" and the stimulant made me "fast" and they sadly did not meet in the middle for a few weeks.

But I do wish you the best of luck with your treatment!
