Feeling dissociated with lamictal..? Help! (mood swings)

Postby bobbibobbobbob » Mon May 05, 2014 6:27 pm

I recently found out that I suffer from severe mood swings. After experimenting with different medications such as lithium and latuda (which made me feel horribly disconnected and distracted and just WEIRD), I got onto Lamictal. So I've been feeling pretty stable...but for a while I was on all three of those meds; now I'm just on Lamictal. But for some reason, I'm feeling really really dissociated from myself (I feel like a stranger to myself/body) and disconnected from my surroundings.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem on Lamictal? Or maybe this is a thing that comes with mood swings? I'm on 100 mg of this stuff, and I think it's worse on higher doses. I came down to 100 a few days ago.

Please share your experience with mood swings and Lamictal!

I am on lamotrigine 200mg as one of my mood stabilisers. As an addition to the others it has worked well and for me I have had no side effects from it other than possibly an increase in tremor but that may have been due to a different drug. Sounds like it is causing you problems tho and I think it would be worth discussing this with your Dr as there are other options which might be more appropriate for you.

In terms of its effect it helped a lot for me and I have been more stable since I have been on it tho it is difficult to know exactly what is doing what as I am on other meds too. I know that it is thought to be good for BP depression and I certainly rarely have this now and nothing like as bad as it used to be. I still swing up a fair bit despite my meds tho again nothing like as bad as previous. I suspect the lamotrigine has been helpful for the lows for sure as I used to suffer with bad lows in the past.

I would talk to your Dr

I've been at 400mg of lamictal for about 2 years now... it has been a total game changer in regards to my mood swings and depression. I used to go from 10----to a----10 on the mood scale if you know what I mean... all or nothing, never really finding that middle ground. Now I'd say it's more like 3---to a---3 on my mood swings.

The dissociating part though... I have done that for just about long as I can remember. I was molested as a child and my understanding about myself is this is how I learned to cope with trauma or situations I can't handle. I definitely get into a F everyone state of mind and go crawl in a hole somewhere. If I can't go hide, my mood quickly becomes destructive. I honestly can't say Lamictal has made that change at all for me.
Believe me, I'm just as lost as you.
