Lamictal Rash or something else...?

Postby anonybrin » Fri Apr 11, 2014 8:22 pm

Hello. So I'm not bipolar (at least, as far as I know) but I am taking Lamictal. And of course I have eczema. And a nickel allergy. So naturally I have no damn idea if I'm dying or not! :D

So this is about to get a bit TMI, just warning you, but I have to know what to do...

So... I have a rash. On my entire butt. Embarrassing as hell, but anyway... it's just my butt.

But (ha, but...) a few days ago I wore pants with nickel gems on the butt part. My butt's been itchy since then, but today the rash looked REALLY bad (and my butt's been really itchy), it's super red and stuff and seems to be getting worse (even though I'm not wearing those pants anymore). I've worn those pants in the recent past and my butt's been a bit itchy (god, this is so TMI...) but it hasn't been this bad. Of course, maybe there's also the fact that I fell asleep in them and therefore wore them longer, or maybe it's just been getting worse over time... I don't know. I just put eczema medicine on it, so hopefully it does something. Also note that I doubled my dosage two days ago.

So, what do I do? Can I be sure it's just a nickel allergy? Do I wait to see if the eczema medicine works and the rash goes away? Do I wait and see if the rash gets worse? Do I go to the hospital? You see, I really don't like that last option. Because I don't want to call 911 and say I have a rash on my butt. Sure, I'm saying it here, but at least here I have some anonymity (get it, ANONYbrin...) No trolling whatsoever, I may be new here but I feel I've contributed some legit posts and... sadly this is one of them. Help!

Hi there! Please call your pdoc right away. From what my doctor told me it is very dangerous. That's why they start you at a really low dosage and slowly titrate up so that if you get the rash, they can tell you to quit taking it right away. Please at least make an anonymous phone call to a professional and see what they tell you to do. My bet is they will tell you to discontinue the Lamictal right away. Best of luck!!

Hi

I think that it is important to see a Dr urgently about this. Any rash in the presence of taking lamotrigine needs to be taken seriously. it may well not be down to meds but it is important to get it checked out- and sooner rather than later.

Hope things are OK

My doctor doesn't work on weekends and I have no way of contacting him right now. He did say stop taking it if I get a rash but I asked my best friend's mom (a pharmacist) and she said most likely it's the nickel and not the Lamictal. The rash is also healing very quickly with the medicine I'm using; it's almost gone actually. When I was on Celexa I had a rash all over (the doctor told me it was probably just the cold weather and my eczema, but I'm POSITIVE it was Celexa) and medicine didn't help.

It says before you even get the rash you get a sore throat, a fever, a cough, and flu-like symptoms. I have none of those (except a cough, but I cough a lot in general.) This weird scab appeared on my back a few days ago that was itchy and it's still there but it's not a rash. However, a painful blister just appeared on the inside of my upper lip so... I don't know what to do. It's hard to tell because there's literally ALWAYS something wrong with me. About a year ago I had a lump in my lip that I needed surgically removed, and I'd say I get blisters in my lip at least once a year, so maybe it's a coincidence.

Update: The blister's already almost gone and it doesn't hurt anymore. Really weird. O_o

It sounds like things are improving but if you are worried you can attend A&E/ER to get them to review it. I had an atypical rash on lamotrigine and my psychiatrist sent me to the hospital jic to make sure it was OK and not lamotrigine- given how ill you can get with SJS I think she felt it was important to err on the side of caution.

I hope all is OK

This seems to be exactly what my doctor told me to call her for if I got a rash while taking Lamictal. Seeing a doctor as soon as you can is the best bet, even if things look like they're getting better. It's better than wondering, isn't it?

I told him and he said it's probably just a weird coincidence. I will live!
