Common BP abilities and rituals

Postby Nekoneko » Sat Mar 22, 2014 1:00 pm

I've recently been paying a lot of attention to some heavily overlooked interesting details, abilities and "rituals" that tend to happen in people with mental disorders (particularly people within the BP spectrum).

That being said I started paying attention to some things I've been doing forever now but never gave it much of importance, such as follows:

1.Voluntary adrenaline rush
For as long as I can remember I've had this ability to cause a rush of adrenaline in my body instantly, at any time, without moving a any part of my body, I've proven this many times by increasing my heart rate, as well as dilating pupils in a matter of 1-2 seconds (under consistent lighting of course). Prior to accidentally mentioning this to one of my friends I thought that this was nothing special, but after my friends, family and doctors have witnessed it, they were all very impressed and confused by this :/

2.Voluntary Nystagmus
I've had this since as far as I can remember too. I can shake my eyes left and right extremely rapidly (so that regular camera of 30 fps cannot capture it at all). Thought that was nothing special too, until I've shown it to my sister and then to others.

3.Letting out of the extra physical energy
This retarded, super hilarious, but inevitable ritual that I tend to do at times (when I'm alone of course :D) is basically yelling something out through my squeezed teeth very rapidly, it could be any sound, any short word repeated rapidly (like 10 times in 2 seconds :D) while also having most of the muscles of my body strained and usually grabbing my face with my hands and pressing against it with my palms :D. I's kind of an outburst of physical energy that I just have to let out somehow (even though I can be depressed or anxious, it doesn't matter....usually it happens after I do a good job at something and am satisfied with the result of it :D)
Yeah, I know it's hilarious :D
If someone was to see that he would view it as an act of hysteria or intense anger or hatred, or something like that, and indeed it does look and sound like that, but like I said, usually it comes after I'm satisfied with the end result of my work, but it definitely can also be just a pure letting out of extra physical energy that happens every now and then.

So I wonder if any of you BP people have these 3? Or is it just me?

Please vote, this poll could point out to some interesting things, as I continue to gather my statistics and understand what's really going on with us BP people :)
And of course, share with us some abilities/interesting facts/rituals of your own!! I'd appreciate it very much.

I recognise the voluntary adrenaline rush - I am able to do this. I cant do the others but I have certianly come across ppl who have voluntary nystagmus.

I can both voluntarily speed up and slow down again my heart rate. I can also voluntarily dilate or constrict my pupils a little. I have a base pulse of 40-60, if i speed it up i get to around 70-80, then it takes longer to come down, it then stays at around 60. Not sure if i can manipulate any other vitals. (I heard there are people who can rise their core temperature, though)

My pulse also never goes over 100, even during sport, it's hereditary, my dad has the same thing.

Maybe i could use this technique to get out of bed better in the morning? (If i wake up with 40 then speed up to 80, then fall back to 60...)

I too find this very interesting.

I think this is actually sort of common. I've done some research with biosignals, like heart rate, EMG, ECG, EEG, etc. When working with athletes, we found that all of them were able to control (to a certain extent) their response. For example, I was working with a professional swimmer and he was able to increase or decrease heart rate, galvanic skin response, among others. I don't know how common this is for the general population, though.

Funny! I didn't even know this existed! From a very quick search, it appears to be genetic. Can anyone else in your family do this?

Nekoneko wrote:3.Letting out of the extra physical energy

Well, I do something similar to this, but it's only related to irritability, anger and stuff like that. Not sure if it counts. I hate it, though. I feel like I have too much energy inside me and I have to let it out somehow. It's very distressing. I'm not sure it's the same as what you experience.

I really don't think any of this is related to MI, except maybe for the last one, which might be common for people experiencing mania, extreme anxiety, anger issues, and stuff like that.

That makes sense. I learned to control my heart rate through sports. I originally learned to slow down when i was going by bike to school and my pulse was coming to my throat. I also do some martial arts and a big thing is to be able to control your breathing (this is the first step to be able to control your vitals i think - your breath rate influences your nervous system. The idea is that breathing is the source of life energy/strength. You breath out when you use your strength - you are stronger that way. More advanced is when you look at your enemy and like strike when he is breathing out. You take away the breath of your enemy and sooner or later he won't have any strength left)

Thanks for all the replies and votes people! :)

Wow that's awesome! I'm not alone here and that may give us some insight.

@Cracked, thanks Cracked girl, you're quite active and informative as always!
I think all of us who can do this should go to our backyard, determine our maximum weight we can lift, write it down, and then after some rest (preferably the next day or some other day) try to lift the weight that we failed to lift the other day, by using this adrenaline rush thing...I can't believe I never actually tested it so far :)

@thejan, yes, as invicta has pointed out, it definitely seems to be more present in people who are athletes. For me it's the same except for the breathing part...I don't even have to breathe to do this, or I can bread normally and still feel the adrenaline rush and see my pupils dilate quite significantly. I bet you can do it too independent of breading it's probably that you just never tried to do it that way.
And yes, it does help a bit to wake up in the morning, but I avoid doing it for too long, I do it just a couple of times briefly, cause doing it too often a day for everything and anything can probably stress out the body, exacerbate anxiety and maybe even provoke some Adrenal Fatigue (though I don't know if Adrenal Fatigue is just a bogus or a real condition, some docs say this, some docs say that, so I don't know who to believe anymore :S).

@invicta, yes, my research also points out that Nystagmus is almost exclusively a genetically related thing, and indeed my younger sister can do this too.

The reason I think that some of these things may be related to Mental Illnesses is because evidence shows that Nystagmus has quite a lot to do with Neurological disorders and/or neuronal toxicity.
As for the Adrenaline rush, sure, I don't see any real evidence that shows that it can be related to mental illnesses, although I wouldn't rule it out yet.

And as for that loony "ritual" of mine, yes sure it can be out of irritability and anger too (heck, I even think that that's how it started in the first place), but I guess it was funny to me later on and I started doing it out of cracking myself up hahaha :D and then it turned into a habit of letting the negative or extra energy out :) It's hard to explain, it could be out anger, irritability, happiness, means to let out the physical energy that builds up by me sitting in front of PC for 5-8 hours a day :D or any combination of those.
I guess the closest thing to that that I've seen anywhere is - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZU2k-U2Ze0o at 3:07 :D
Heeey, now that I think of it, Korn ripped me off!! :P

Non of the above.

All I can say is "How unusual!"
It is not always possible to make someone's discomfort go away.
Sometimes, the best thing we can do is resist the urge to fix it and instead just say, "You, too?"

Thanks for the reply skilsaw! :D I know it's unusual, funny and perhaps even scary to some of you, but of course my goal was not to scare anyone :) my goal is to find some interesting patterns that seem to be quite rare in regular people, yet actually quite common in people with MI, particularly BP, OCD and ADHD.

Actually the more I think of it the more I realize that this is actually quite close to that awkward ritual of mine - http://youtu.be/ZU2k-U2Ze0o?t=3m7s

That's only one in the list I can do. Takes a bit of concentration though - and leaves with feeling it'll end with hellish headache if I keep doing it.

Speaking of eye thingies, anyone know how common it is to able to stare forward and voluntarily blank out colors - and practically blind myself until I blink/lose concentration. Since I've been doing that only when I've been alone I have no idea if that has physical change in eyes.. >>a

I do the "let out the extra physical energy" people will often laugh at me because I will do something sort of like "jazz hands" and make a high pitched squeeling sound while grinding my teeth.
