Does anyone sleep around when depressed?

Postby Crawling » Mon Mar 10, 2014 9:40 am

I do it to punish myself because the voices in my head tell me to. Then I convince myself I'm a worthless slag. I'm very down right now.

Hi Crawling.
You are really down on yourself, aren't you.
That's too bad. As if having a mental illness isn't enough, you feel you need to hate yourself.

I've not heard of anyone sleeping around when depressed.
I think it is more common for people to become permiscuous during a hypomanic or manic phase of bipolar disorder.

Let me guess at what is going on in your life.
Sleeping around is a viscious cycle that traps you.
First, you feel depressed, insecure and unloved and you get "love" the only way you know how.
Then you feel bad about it and the insecurity and lack of self love feels worse...
This leads to finding another partner.
which leads to more depression and insecurity.

I shouldn't put words in your mouth.
Give me the boot if I've got it wrong.

All I can say is that you are a person of value. Depressed, or not, everyone is entitled to be loved. But you deserve genuine love from a committed partner. Not always the easiest thing to find.
You are not a worthless slag.

Keep coming back to the forum for support.
People here have been through what you are going through and understand.

Take care,

Hugs Crawling

I am sorry you are feeling so down on yourself. SOunds like you are having a really difficult time

I do sleep around with ppl- or at least have done in the past but this has been when my mood has been elevated. In the past I have also slept around independent of mood in an attempt to feel better about myself- but it does not work and you end up feeling worse about yourself. I think this was abuse related before I had done so much work on it. I think other things can come into play aside from the BP at times - or at least that is what I have found.

You are a good person and you dont deserve to be so unhappy. It sounds to me like your Dr needs to be doing more that they are to try to help you atm from what you have said. Do you have anyone who can advocate for you in terms of getting more help?

Thanks cracked no I don't have someone who can advocate. I've seen 3 psychiatrists now and my current one is crap. He shouts at me for taking a overdose. He shouted at me about my behaviour last time I was manic tbh I really can't talk to him. What you say about abuse resonates with me as I am a victim of sexual abuse.

Hugs

Your psych sounds awful. Is there anything you can do about them? Eg if you are in the UK complain to PALS or similar?

Abuse can be so difficult to try to deal with on top of everything else and it can feel like fighting a losing battle when you put it all together. There is hope - I know it can be difficult to see tho. An important thing to hold onto is that you deserve better than ppl using your body.

Hi Crawling,
I know what it is like to have a bad psychiatrist.
My son's psychiatrist seemed angry if my son's medication wasn't working.
Then, it felt like a punishment when he changed my son's prescription.
The facist dictator retired and my son got a new psychiatrist who has a much more gentle nature and is encouraging.

I hope you are able to get a psychiatrist who genuinely wants to help you.
Having a good professional relationship with a psychiatrist is essential if you want to make any progress.
It is not always possible to make someone's discomfort go away.

Re: Does anyone sleep around when depressed?

Postby electricbipolar » Mon Mar 10, 2014 6:38 pm

Before I got diagnosed, I would sleep around when depressed. It was an attempt to make myself feel better. What a joke. I would just dive deeper into depression afterwards. But that still didn't stop me. It's something I'm very ashamed about. I haven't even told my psych about that part of my life. Since I've been medicated it hasn't been a problem.

My heart goes out to you. Sorry you are having a tough time. I truly hope you can find a new pdoc who has more sensitivity and compassion. Please take care!
