Mental Health Supplements

Postby mbk734 » Sat Mar 01, 2014 2:34 pm

I have been taking vitamin d3 and I find it helps my mood a lot especially in the winter months. It is known as the sunshine vitamin. Fish oil is also supposed to help with brain health. Eating healthy and exercising helps too. I also take zinc as it is supposed to increase testosterone. Drinking plenty of water makes me feel better too. Does anyone take any other vitamins specifically for mental health?

It sounds strange, but a multivitamin works for me. When I eat healthy my moods are so much better. Also sleep helps. But be cautious of the B vitamins as they may shoot you into mania. I've also heard of some people that have taken an over-the-counter form of lithium. Hope this helps!

I know someone who treats her BP with only high dose Omega 3 fish oils and some ppl swear by lithium orotate. I personally dont have a lot of faith in them but I do know ppl who supplements have worked well for.

In terms of St John's Wort i actually think that is dangerous. I went high on it and I know a lot of ppl do. I think its sale should be restricted

I know someone who swears by taking melatonin. It's the hormone that regulates the sleep/wake cycles /circadian rhythms.

It is. DO NOT take this if you are taking an SSRI, MAOI or tricyclic antidepressant as it can cause serotonin syndrome. Talk to your doctor before mixing this with other medications.

I used to take melatonin for sleep as well and found that helpful and have also taken 5htp for depression though it did make me go high and my doctor said to just use it in short bursts as too much medication that increases serotonin can cause serotonin syndrome.
