Tell me about wellbutrin. WHen would I get suicidal thoughts

Postby afink87 » Fri Feb 28, 2014 2:01 pm

Today is my first day taking wellbutrin. I'm taking it to quit smoking. Zoloft made me suicidal but I was 17.
I'm taking it to quit smoking. Today is my first day taking wellbutrin and quitting smoking. I want to die. I feel like I just want to die.

I can't tell if it's the wellbutrin or the quitting smoking. Also I have been depressed lately, so I'm hoping it'll help. I'm 27 so my risk for suicidal thoughts is decreased so I'm hoping it's the quitting

If you took it and stopped smoking how long did it take to work?

I have to be honest here, I am taking my husband's prescription. I HAVE to quit smoking because I'm getting surgery, it's so hard that it's the only route I had left and I can't get an appt with my pdoc for two weeks which is right before the surgery.

Hi afink87,

you are doing something very dangerous. Antidepressants increase suicide risk in general; the fact you are not below 25 doesn't mean this problem is gone. Also, I remember you posting here before; I can't remember what sort of illness it was related (bipolar I guess?) to but I assume you might either be on other medication or at least diagnosed. For you wellbutrin is not what it would be for a mentally healthy person.

From Wikipedia: "In 2009 the FDA issued a health advisory warning that the prescription of bupropion for smoking cessation has been associated with reports about unusual behavior changes, agitation and hostility. Some patients, according to the advisory, have become depressed or have had their depression worsen, have had thoughts about suicide or dying, or have attempted suicide.[45] This advisory was based on a review of anti-smoking products that identified 75 reports of "suicidal adverse events" for bupropion over ten years."

My advice is that you stop taking it immediately and contact your GP if you can't get hold of anyone from your psychiatric support team even over the phone. Please stay safe. If you can't get rid of your suicidal thoughts, call emergencies and go there rather than act on them.

Big hug -- I'm worried -- please keep us posted.
Currently working on my upcoming signature.

It's weird I don't feel suicidal ;yet I feel like I want to die? It was before I was feeling ill before I took the pill so I think it's lack of cigarettes omg this is soooo hard.

I don't have bipolar I have an "undiagnosed mood disorder" I just like the folks here. Very knowledgeable, and thanks for your concern. I've alrdy taken the pill so I'm just going to have to ride the day out.

I take Wellbutrin and in my opinion, I don't think taking just one today would cause suicidal thoughts (or just feeling like you want to die). I don't smoke, but I can only imagine that if you are a heavy smoker, you're probably having withdrawals from the nicotine. Like I said, this is just my opinion. I agree with the previous poster, though, that you are doing something very dangerous by taking this medication that hasn't been prescribed to you.
