Seizures

Postby kenny66 » Sun Feb 09, 2014 11:41 am

I had an issue for some time with some intermittent episodes of momentary loss of consciousness. maybe only for a couple of seconds. A couple of times I have staggered with it but I haven't ever given much thought to it as I thought it was probably from meds. Anyway I have had 3 this week which was probably from my recent ECT and most likely some sort of seizure. Whatever the cause, the doc mentioned to me that there is some untested evidence antipsychotics might reduce a persons seizure level. The story goes that apparently being on an anticonvulsant like I am doesn't necessarily protect you from having seizures. It might be of interest to some people to have a look at it. There appears to be very little data that I could find that conclusively proves this but it is an interesting piece of information......Happy researching

Thank you for sharing this information Kenny. I really hope that your seizures/loss of consciousness improves. Have you spoken to your doctor? What are their thoughts on the reasons for this?

Well, I had my MRI/brain scan today and I get those results in a couple of days. Doctor is pretty well sure its seizures as I had one small episode at his surgery where I didn't fall over but just had a momentary loss of being not quite there. Its just what's causing them that's got to be worked out.

Unfortunately you pretty well need to be having a seizure at the time of the scan for that to be absolutely conclusive.
For me its quite good for another person to have seen it as sometimes I am not sure whether my perception of things is right.

Hm. This type of paradoxical response to medication suggests these seizures may be psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES), also known as dissociative seizures. In Europe they are classified as a type of conversion disorder, related to the dissociative disorders. It is possible to diagnose these seizures very precisely, especially if they are frequent. That is done by having you wear a hair-net type electronic recording device for a day or so as you sit around reading or watching TV or working on the computer or whatever. Treatment is very effective, but also very different from treatment for epilepsy, so it is important to get a good differential diagnosis.

There are a handful of threads about diagnosis of seizures on the dissociative identity disorder forum here on this website.

Hope this helps.

Thanks UNa
I live in a small regional town so I have to go to a larger one if there is an issue out of the ordinary. I have written down what you say and will take it along to the doc. I don't quite understand what you say the problem is, (I am pretty dumb on this sort of tuff) but I will research it thoroughly to educate myself. Thanks heaps for all your advice.

Can you also tell me where I might find the threads on dissociative seizures on the forum?

Thanks Kenny

Sure. Just search the DID Forum here for the word "seizure". To get you started here is a link to a relevant thread that even has photos: DID Forum: EEG Testing?

A lot of people with mood disorders on benzos. Klonopin is actually intended for seizures and used for anxiety as well. Maybe it's something worth looking into?
