Hi, my 16 yr old son was diagnosed as being bipolar several years ago. My ex-husband (also bipolar) committed suicide last April. My 13 year old daughter has been displaying nearly identical behavior patterns to my son. I thought maybe her actions were caused by her trying to deal with the grief of losing her dad, but then I remembered that my ex had said a few times that he thought she was bipolar as well. I would like to know if anyone thinks it likely that she is bipolar, I am uncertain what the odds of having more than one child with this disorder are. I am not bipolar, but I do have bouts of depression that sometimes require medication. The reason for my hesitation in seeking treatment is simple; I don't know if I can stand to go through another round of people trying to fix ME instead of helping my child while my child's behavior just gets worse and worse. If it's not likely that this could be the problem I would rather just stick to the grief counseling she's already receiving. I would appreciate any input, I am nearly at the end of my rope.[/i][/b]

I was diagnost with BP about 2 yrs ago. Now looking back, I see, I've had it a long time. For me, without some tramatic events in my life I think I would have been OK without drugs, and cognitive therapy.
I would sugest, learn everything you can about it, support her, but give her some freedom to make some dissisions b/c she'll have to live with them in the end.
I think it's OK to get opinions from dr's and talk with her about everything. This is what she has to live with. You just have to know the signs where you must step in and any Dr. will let you know.
