I've tried (unsuccessfully) to explain a relationship between my moods and time of day. I don't really think it's related to bipolar, but I've noticed the following in my own experience:

1) During the day, I tend to be a lot more emotionally numb (or, to use DBT jargon, reason-minded)
2) At night, despair can creep in more easily. Sometimes I get this intense sort of agitation and extreme dissatisfaction with everything and I get, for lack of a better word, extremely fretful

Whenever I talk to a mental health professionals about it, they kinda shrug it off so I've just decided it's just a personal quirk, and not really a "mental health thing".

YES. Definitely.

For me, it's been paranoia lately. Recently I've been getting paranoia and slight hallucinations a tad more than usual. These primarily occur at night, probably because they're relating to shadows/ movement of shadows due to lights or whatnot (quite often outside when driving, or in my living room (we live next to a highway and car lights shine in). The paranoia is very great though at night, even if I'm not seeing things in the shadows. I've found myself locking the door to my room, keeping a knife next to my bed, and I even need to keep little lights on (like from the printer and whatnot) in order to sleep (guess I'll be investing in a night-light).

Also, I find myself more depressed and moody at night, too; this made be partly due to being sleepy, though. When more manic, I don't feel too sleepy so this doesn't happen. But even when I'm in a "normal" phase, I still get slightly depressed/moody at night. I am definitely thinking this could very well relate to darkness/sleepiness.

I defiantly think I suffer with paranoia at night too. I also sleep with two knives next to my bed. I can hear faint voices at night that I do not hear during the day.

Hey Lindsey,

I find I feel much worse at night especially when I have insomnia because that extends the day even longer. I don't know if that's because I accumulate stress throughout the day or something else. Maybe it's medication thing. Who knows.

Hope you feel better soon. Take care.

I have this problem, too! I couldn't find any mention of it in relation to bipolar, so I just assumed it was a quirk, but yeah. At night I tend to get more paranoid/anxious/have more intense physical symptoms. I think it's largely because there's less to distract me at night, and my senses are heightened by the dark; compounded with insomnia, I just end up noticing everything I'm feeling more intensely, I think... Especially, as aforementioned, the paranoia (and not even of things I believe are real, stuff like zombies and ghosts), which leads to mild auditory hallucinations, sometimes shadows, and occasionally tactile ones. Also panic. It's just all more intense alone in the dark, with little point of reference to recognizable reality to ground me. :?

yes, big time!

My psychotic symptoms are the worst around 3 AM. Even if I happen to be sleeping, when i'm episodic, I often wake up from very intense nightmares at that time. I haven't had full blown voices in the light of day, but have heard some talking or singing or rapping at night, or really distorted sensory experiences at least. (The rapping is the weirdest, I am not a rapper, nor do I listen to a lot of rap, I don't think a lot of people get rappers in their head anyway. lol!) Things crawling on my skin, cars driving by out to get me, evil presences walking around. When I was really bad I used to wake up and call people in the morning with a whole bunch of stories and they are like 'why don't you call me?" "well because it's 3 AM."

I realize that this is an older discussion, however, I wanted to weigh in to discuss my own problems with symptoms at night.
I think someone above mentioned that they become "fretful" at night. I think that sums it up for me.
After I take my evening medicines, I feel loopy--even drunk. I know that I have a tendency to stagger around my house when I've taken my medicines. God help me when I have to go downstairs for something. I'm afraid I'm going to break my neck one night.
I had a cardiac scare back in January of this year. Of course, this is on my mind at various times of the day. Most days I really don't think about it. But at night, every little pain or upset stomach leaves me feeling as though death is just around the corner.
Last night I was watching a movie on my laptop in my bed. Out of the corner of my right eye, I could have sworn I saw a bright light entering my room. It was floating near the ceiling. Well, I was absolutely convinced that what I'd seen was the angel of death, preparing to take my life at some point during the night.
I'm an otherwise sound person. I don't have thoughts like these during the day. But at night, things can get tricky. Plus, I live alone. It's just me and my two dogs. It's not like I can phone a friend in the middle of the night to tell them that I feel like I'm being stalked by grim death.
Last night I was having what I call, "rolling panic attacks". I ended up taking an extra sedative, which helped a great deal--allowing me to finally drift off to sleep.
