Yesterday

Postby Split Anxiety » Sat Dec 15, 2012 7:24 pm

I'm not sure if anyone else was watching the news yesterday of the terrible massacre, but in the very beginning they said the shooter most-likely had schizophrenia or extreme manic bipolar. They also went on to say that this is the face of mental illness. I found this to be very ignorant and anger provoking. The fact that they knew nothing about the kid and instantly jump to incorrect conclusions. Turns out he had something in the autism spectrum, and no reports of mental illness.

I don't know if anyone else noticed this yesterday.

My heart feels for those affected by the senseless loss of life, prayers go out to everyone.

They said it was the face of mental illness? Seriously?

Ignorant sh!t like that is why I can't watch the news. Just... ugh. Another poster in a different thread said something about their dad calling and saying that, because they were mentally ill, he didn't believe they were sorry about it. It's like, come the f*ck on, people. Even if he was mentally ill, that's clearly not what most people with MI do or want to do, and there is no reason whatsoever to assume that we all sign off on whatever someone else with MI does.

Of course, if we're being intersectional, there's also the race factor in the U.S. If this were someone of middle eastern descent, they'd call it terrorism, no two ways about it. If his skin was black, they'd paint it as a "menace to society" type situation. If you look back, when the shooter is white they always tend to try to paint it as mental illness, like it was just a tragic mistake of the person not being treated and monitored properly. :/ It's pretty problematic in more ways than one.

Regardless, the stigma after this media sh!tstorm is going to suck, even if they do completely acquit him of MI. :(

Yea, everyone wants to lump us all into the same category.... If one person who has a mental illness commits a crime like this, then it is just on that person. No one else. I can't believe we have to defend ourselves every time something like this happens.

This is the ignorance of society. I can't believe they said it is the face of mental illness which is heartbreaking to me. I am with you guys when I say people must be educated better about these things. I hope people aren't scared that I am going to kill them or something because of a diagnosis.
