First of all I love the "you know you're bipolar when..." thread. For those of you who are bipolar and those of us living with bipolars it is both sad and funny. My husband has done or said almost everything you mentioned.
He is currently un-medicated for bipolar but addicted to oxycodine for back pain. He is prescribed 3 300mg a day and takes them all or more each day.
I can't figure out what triggers his episodes. Is it lack of sleep and then episode or episode then lack of sleep? I have also noticed that interaction with people may trigger as well. When he is in a depressed state, well he is depressed and lathargic. If he can muster the energy to get out of the house and run some errands and interact with the world, he may come back home in a full blown episode.

Did the chicken come before the egg or the egg before the chicken?
Hypomania/mania can sometimes be induced by lack of sleep. Generally lack of sleep is caused by hypo/mania.
Yes, talking to people can be triggering.

Hi and welcome
Self medicating is pretty common in BP - a fair few ppl here have done it and I am still doing it. Has your husband had any support in trying to address the opiate addiction? Drugs can have an impact on mood and it might be that taking this is affecting his BP. It might be worth looking into if he wants to and it has not been looked at before. Just a thought.
Sleep wise I find lack of sleep precipitates being high for me and then the cycle gets worse as the high mood means I cant sleep and the further sleep deprivation makes me more high.
I hope you can get some answers and support from here. it sounds like things are pretty tough.
