My psychiatrist has been blackmailing me to keep me in the hospital and refuses to lower my medication even though im taking 2100mg of lithium and 15mg of abilify. And to top it off he called CPS on my mother. Theres no other psychiatrist on my island. Any advice on what I should do?

Hmmm fornoone-

This sounds like a situation that lends itself to abuse. How is he "blackmailing" you? Are you committed to the hospital, or could you check yourself out (definitely not recommending that you do so).

Could you reduce your meds AMA (against medical advice)? Doing so might require that you are disguising the fact that you are doing it.

I would not recommend taking the dosage of your medication into your own hands, particularly if you are in a hospital setting. If they catch you, you may end up there longer, or switch your meds to injectable form.

Is there a disability rights agency in your area? Sometimes the numbers are posted by the phones in the hospitals. Or you could always try to ask a social worker for the number. I would talk to them about how you feel your rights are being violated.

Unfortunately, if you are sectioned to a hospital (forced to be there legally) then the best way to get yourself out, is to do what the doctors want you to do. Remain calm at all times, even if they do something that upsets you greatly. When you are out of the hospital you can go back to your regular psych doc or PCP/GP and discuss a reduction in medication with them.
