binge eating and surgery

Postby crazychick » Wed Nov 30, 2005 10:53 pm

has anyone here either had or know someone who binges who has had the gastric bypass surgery? i am looking into having it done - the "band" kind, where they put a like a belt around your stomach that can be adjusted by doctors, if needed, and i have had a history of binging. i am doing it mostly because of my diabetes - it (along with the binging) is making my weight get out of control. i have posted more than once of a few topics here, and i seldom get a response and am thinking of deleting this page for lack of interest (from others). so i hope someone out there will answer! 8)

Hey, I hope you are still with us my dear. I'm sorry not to have posted already but I have been busy for the past few months.

Do you really think you are ready for the Gastric Bypass? I mean, you will be on liquidated foods for therest of your life and there really is no going back with curent medical practices. You need to be sure.

Of course, I can understand your frustration with having Diabetes Mellitus but maybe you can still cope with it? Anyway, I implore you to consider more what the Gastric Bypass will mean for you. I'd advise you to get the opinions of a few doctors.

I am not trying to dissuade you my friend. I just want to make sure that things turn out ok for you. Keep me posted, eh?

Gastric bypass can be effective, but it's one heck of a step that you need to be ready for, both in mind and body.

As Chucky says, you'll be on liquid/soft food for a while to come. Once your new stomach pouch expands you'll still have to watch it as eating too much can hurt you or make you have to vomit. At any rate you won't be able to eat as usual anymore.

You'll also be pretty weak for a while, both because of the surgery and because of the weight loss.

I hate to say this, but there have been deaths as a result of this operation... One website claims 2%, the nearest hospital has 0.5%. That's why I say you should be ready and should trust the person who will be working on you.

On the bright side, you can expect to be back on your feet within six months and to lose 60% of excess weight within 2 years. Also, if you suffer from diabetes, you can expect your situation to improve or be cured.
