Personally, I stop bingeing by thinking really hard about NOT going through with the binge. I look for something else to do. It is very difficult. You have to be prepared for difficulty.

Certainly, if I am in a happy mood I will not binge. Mood plays a major part in the whole cycle.

Can anyone else shed some light on this? I feel this guest needs many different ideas from different people. I think everyone else could use them too.

I don't always stop, but what I do is check my feelings. What am I feeling, what just happened, what's triggering this, am I physically full, is there anything else I can do that will give me comfort?

Just by checking in with yourself, you start to see patterns of why you're bingeing. Also if you can focus for just a second on your feeling then you might be able to stop eating long enough to realize you're eating to shut your emotions down.

Even if you can't stop right away, dealing with the emotions behind it is the path I'm on to find some healing.

You made a good point that I failed to mention there. It is very important to map it all out and realise what exactly is making you want to binge. Like, we don't just binge for no reason. Something upsets us and then we binge to 'escape'.

If you can find out what exactly is causing you to feel bad then you can start working on making it better.

I try to handle my eating one day at a time. If I pig out today, I just try to take control back tomorrow. Each day, I try to do a lot of exercise. If I ate a lot yesterday, I do more exercise today. If one of my 3 meals is too large, I try to cut back on the other two.

My eating is often triggered by stress in my life and in my head. I write in a journal everday to try to get in touch with my feelings. I also have a vast support system of friends that I use. The worst thing for me is to sit around the house--that's where the ketchen is. If I keep busy with life, I find that I do not get the urge to binge so much.
Good Luck,
James

The exercise is the way in which he purges. It's the same for me and it's not anorexia. You made many good points James. You have mentioned what I strive to do but it is quite hard at times to keep busy. I think that life eventually picks up if you just hang in there. A big help is when a change in your life occurs. Like, I started a new course in college recently and I have little urge to binge-eat.

I've wondered if I have a major eating disorder. How bad do you have to get? I used to be very heavy. I lost all the weight and have kept it off for years. I'm about the healthest person around if you count medical tests: pulse rate, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. I have a strong belief that most all medical and mental disorders can be cured or managed with exercise such as running, yoga, martial arts, walking.

Am I living in a fantasy world believing I can stay healthy mentally and physically with exercise? My way of life seems to work for me for years. How long do I have to stay healthy to find our if my way of dealing with life is OK for me? Exercise is not the only thing in my life. I love to read and garden.

How can you tell when exercise is a problem?

Exercise might become a problem is you stop enjoying it but feel trapped into doing it. i'm not talking about getting pressure from a gym instructor. I'm talking about out of your own free will...Do you feel trapped into doing it?

Exercise does not cure psychological illnesses directly of course. Exercise does put our bosy and mind in a better state to be able to cure illnesses though.

you can also tell that you have a problem about the way you feel about it when you dont exercise. some people get really paranoid and feel discusted then do twice as much the next day to make up for it. if you dont feel bad when you dont exercise for any reason then it should be a good sign for you. exercise is great for the mind and the body it has been proven it releases chemicals in the brain to make you happy. we are animals and we are built to be mobile. but you should also have a look at the amount of excercise you do each day and the amoiunt of food you eat each day. if you are not trying to loose weight you should be eating a lot if you do a lot of exercise . like before or after you exercise have a power drink or bar or something like that. that is what any athletic healthy person does its the way we were built.

but it does become a problem if you are doing too much and eating too little. also you can tell if it is a problem if you get problems with certain parts of your body and dont allow yourself to rest. that means your forcing yourself and doing more harm than good
