Which is healthier: binge eating or crash dieting?

Postby YouCantSeeMe » Wed May 05, 2010 11:32 am

Okay so, I'm 225 pounds, 6'0, male and 20 years old, I live a sedentary lifestyle and I binge eat at least three times a week, sometimes more, I can finish a whole pizza in one day + a big bag of chips and then some. I'm seriously a compulsive over eater, I eat even when I'm full. My weight goes up and down but this is the highest it's been since 2006. (I was 240 pounds)

A few weeks ago some lady in my town who wasn't overweight at all suffered a stroke and I ever since I've been thinking about how dangerous my eating habits are, I'm the poster child for heart attack victims, I can eat two big bags of chips a day. (I do this at least twice a week) I'm really afraid of a heart attack, a few weeks ago I bought a small bag of peanuts and finished them, I had chest pains for the rest of the night..

Anyways, I told my mom about this and told her that I wanted to go on a crash diet, she told me that I should "Eat protein, vegetables, exercise" and what not, I told her to get real since I can't do that, I'm agoraphobic and I'm on welfare [cue dramatic music] I can't go out to exercise and I especially can't buy all these exotic foods lol, anyways we started to debate on which was healthier, a crash diet or my current diet, I ended up convincing her that it would be best if I went on a semi-crash diet.

It's actually not really that unhealthy, I'm going to have 3 small bowls of Special K a day for as long as I can (I'm hoping a month) it adds up to 600 calories a day.

I lose weight really quickly, If I don't binge in a week I would be 5-8 pounds lighter - no joke. 175 is "normal weight" for someone of my height so that's my goal weight, I think I can get down there in about 2 months.

What do you guys think would kill me first? Compulsive over eating or a low calorie diet for a few months?

Neither is healthy. You want to try to get onto a healthy diet. In terms of exercise you could try an exercise DVD which is a low cost option instead of a gym and the weather won't be a problem...

Well I'm not just poor, I'm also extremely lazy so yeah I don't want to do exercises. lol
It's been 5 days and I've already lost 10 pounds =\ I did finish a bad of chips on the day before I started though before weighing myself so I guess that played a part.

Physically I feel great, I'm just hungry at times although it's not that bad since I eat every 5 hours. I really think I can last long, yesterday we threw a mothers day party and eating didn't cross my mind at all.

Anyways this is a bit embarrassing but I have diarrhea  and I literally ate nothing yesterday (Was nervous about something I couldn't sleep/eat) Does anyone have any idea why I'd have it? I didn't eat.. Could this be serious?

I'm going to tell you again... Losing weight that way is dangerous!

Of course you are going to have diarrhea if you have been restricting your diet to just Special K which is probably high in fibre. There is a reason our bodies need a variety of food. You need a balance of food to get the right intake of vitamins, minerals, protein, fibre, carbohydrates etc. Our bodies don't function properly without the balance. You are effectively putting yourself through malnourishment, eating the way you are eating. Of course you will lose weight doing that. You are also garaunteed to stack the weight straight back on again once you stop this ridiculous diet. Currently you are starving your body therefore your metabolism will slow down, when you start eating normally again your body will hoard the weight because it thinks it needs to have fat reserves to get through the lean times. You are in a very dangerous cycle.

You put yourself at risk of a variety of very serious medical problems by doing what you are doing. You need to see a doctor and get proper help for this problem.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I was the special k diet I would binge more than ever It works yes but you lose more muscle than fat, and when I saw it was working I would go to the fridge and say well a little bite won't hurt I've already lost some weight, and everytime I would do that it would end with two packages of cookie though, as many slices of ham to "at least get some protein in" I'd go look in the mirror and say alright I'm not bloated/fat yet so i can have one more little bite out of something and be done, the next thing I know I've been in the kitchen taking little bites, spoonfuls out of everything for 45 mins I'd go to the mirror and say ###$ I've f***** up,but it's all good, it's not a terrible **** up, I'll just get back on the special k diet tomorrow and lose it all.... Until the just one more little bite to end it, I'd spend the rest of the day eating evrything and always end with a ton of fruit to make myself think I'm getting fiber in to push all the stuff I ate out. I'd eat non stop until my mom/sister got home so they wouldn't know but even then I'd say I've already messed up today so I might as well eat as much as I can before I get back on my diet tomorrow, and even with people at home I'd wait for tthem to be distracted to sneak into the kitchen and eat leftovers, cookies etc only at the end of the day they weren't little bites out of everything they were whole cookies big spoonfuls of chocolate syrup caramel peanut butter and nutella, and anything you can think of that would be on the fridge including hot wing sauce, wasnt evem eating good food I was just eating anything edible to eat regardless of what it was my face would be bloatted and fat and my stomach was huge at the end of every binge day which was at LEAST 3 times per week then I'd be back on the special k diet and go back to binging when I was thin again. The special k dietjust makes you crave things more and make you think you binge and just redo the diet and be fine but you wont

Here's a quick 2-minute video on what happens to your body when you go on a diet - Why Diets Don't Work

In short, you need to find a healthier lifestyle that you enjoy. If you carry on with the present one, you will suffer serious consequences. You do not have to cut out everything you currently enjoy, but you do need to moderate your quantities.

I'd recommend seeing a good dietitian in your area, because no two people are alike, and you need to find out what works for you or it won't work in the long term.
