binging once a day?

Postby Kathryn » Fri Apr 07, 2006 11:07 pm

i think i may have a mild eating disorder. basically, i eat when i have to study (and i'm in law school so i study a lot). lately, i've been eating one huge meal (about 1200 calories in one sitting over the course of an hour) a day, and then maybe a smaller meal at a different point. after "binging", I am so full that I don't eat for the next 12+ hours. i am 5 feet and currently weight 108 pounds, in case that puts my caloric intake in context.

I want to know what the health risks are to eating one huge meal a day. is it bad for you? am i a binge eater? also, i do try to burn off the calories by exercising (and burning about 400-500 calories) after eating, because I am trying to shed about four pounds for the summer...is that an effective means to lose weight? I am too stressed to have the discipline to significantly cut back on calories, which is why i'm resorting to exercise.

I believe that you are on the verge of bulimia and stress is the cause. I am worrying for you because I do not want you to get worse. You have done a great thing by coming to this forum but I would not advise getting too into the realm of psychological illnesses. What you simply need to do is learn to relax by giving yourself EXTRA time for winding-down.

Another thing I'd like you to look at is why you feel it is necessary to become 4-pounds less by the summer? Is this really essential, for it is only compounding your levels of stress my dear.

Thank you so much for responding. What do you mean by giving myself EXRA time for winding-down? How? I guess you are right that I am stressed. I have been having trouble sleeping lately, and I think it is related to stress (I have too many thoughts going through my mind at night).

About the bulimia. What constitutes a binge? (many of my guy friends consume as many calories as I do in one sitting, but of course, they are much larger people.) And what are the health consequences of them? I never vomit after eating, so I do not think I am bulimic, but I wonder if binge-eating causes other health problems, such as diabetics, etc...perhaps the health scare will motivate me to control my eating habits.

I want to lose four pounds by the summer because I just look better if I'm four pounds lighter. I gained 5 pounds over the winter and I just want to be where I was a few months ago.

My dear, you can look just as beautiful now as you could if you were 4 pounds less.

I'm not what the definition of a binge is but I guess it is when you eat something, feel guilty about it, and the purge. purging can be anything 'irrational' in response to the guilt-feeling such as self-harming, throwing-up, exercising rigorously, or starving. So, it is irrelevant that you eat the same amount as your guy friends. If the food makes you guilty then so-be-it.

But really, I think that just giving extra time to yourself would be helpful. Look on the internet even for ways to relax. I was like you two years ago and I did nothing at all about the stress until it was too late. So, please act now. Get a new hobby, watch comedy, seek things that make you smile... Essentially, be happy my friend.
