Formeravoidant mentioned the movie Antwone Fisher. Boy, that is one powerful movie. There's a short clip on YouTube.

I'll try not to spoil the ending but a guy in the Navy fights with everybody. He grew up abused in the foster system and through the encouragement of a shrink tries to find his family. His mom was a druggie and his father died in prison before he was born.

But he took the chance and found both his mother and his father's family. The mom thing was a disappointment but the reaction he received from his dad's family made one of the most powerful scenes I've ever seen in a movie. I hesitated for several years from watching it for some reason and I'm sorry I did. I guy I worked with told me after he saw it, he called his dad and told him he loved him.
